They're only used for sticking them onto the gifts that you send to people, but they're not required to send gifts; you can still send a gift even without a sticker, and a gift having a sticker has no impact on what the other player receives from the gift. They don't even get a copy of the sticker that you used, unless it's already part of the gift you sent (and gift contents are completely random).
As of now, there's no point in even collecting them, as there's not even any kind of sticker album to log what stickers you've acquired.

And the fact that they're on sale in the store despite being completely useless is rather appalling, but I suppose is par the course for a monetized mobile game. (And I'm certain that people who don't know any better still buy them regardless.)

Sounds like a feature baked into the game designed to exploit children.
