Dude, the fact that people are only talking about this game because of the trailer being hammy speaks volume about the game itself. The fact that it's releasing without Rollback is the number one reason not to get it.

This game never had a genuine shot at an active online community so not having rollback isn't really a big deal. If you get it, it's almost certainly because you like the genre in general or just to play it offline.

I primarily got Melty Blood because it had rollback. It's even being venued at EVO, and I don't even like anime fighters, especially ones about anime waifu's. But you are probably right about them only targeting a specific audience. The problem is that the fighting game genre is already niche and targeting a game that already has a niche..r audience is just bad business... but great for the fans I guess.

Whats rollback?

Gaming is a weird industry where you can scam the consumers with lies and fake promises, and there will still be fanboys defending it.

Whats rollback?

There's basically two ways to do the net code for online play. Rollback is the modern version that works really well, especially for long distances. Delay-based is the old way of doing things.

Rollback was invented in the West and the original creators have actually open sourced the code so Japanese developers don't even need to pay for it. You need to be somewhat familiar with it, though, because it alters how you implement some of the underlying game and Japanese studios have been dragging their feet for a decade to finally adapt it because they lack the expertise and generally shun things that were invented by foreigners.

Whats rollback?
its a networking technique to reduce (apparent) latency

normally what happens without rollback is clients all sync up to a server or eachother and if someone is lagging or has a high latency then the game slows down a bit to catch up, or desyncs happen and the client jumps to catch up etc

with rollback, theres a bit of smarts added. the clients are predicting what will happen next, and if their predications are correct the experience is seemingly lagless. if the predications are wrong, it "rolls back". ive never played a game with rollback but I imagine that at lower latency connections the experience is great, and as your latency increases its still good a lot of the time but with more rubber banding and stuff like that. someone else whos actually played a game with rollback can chime in on how it feels

Whats rollback?

It's kind of complicated to explain in detail what exactly it is, but the non nerdy way of explaining is that it's the best netcode that replicates offline gameplay the best. It's basically "delay based" netcode ( Ever been in an online match and it just freezes up, that's delay based netcode) but with a program that activates when the internet goes haywire that will predict accurately the next move your opponent will do. Because of the way rollback is programmed into the netcode, it also makes it so that your frames are consistent. So if you're delayed by 4 frames in a match, it will be consistent from 4-6 frames as oppose to it jumping from 4 frames of delay to 16. So it's less likely you're going to drop combo's and be able to do accurate reads with rollback netcode than just having a "delay based" netcode.

Why even bother creating a game for such a niche genre if they had no hope or intention of it succeeding?

Yea, the Japanese have many great quality's about them and their culture. But they have massively stubborn pride and egos in this regard unlike any I've ever seen.

It was so strange to me watching Capcom finally cave and implement it, but only after rebranding it so they can pretend it was something they made in house. IIRC the version of rollback that Capcom uses in Street fighter V is called the "shoryuken engine" or something like that.

Edit: it's called kagemusha

Success metrics vary. Melty Blood Type Lumina sold only a few hundred thousand but the developers still consider it a success.

More people should play that game btw it's really good despite the controversial shield mechanics.
