I have two USB card readers I can plug into my computer. using the one, windows immediately replies with "Windows was unable to complete the format"

using the other, it says "the disk is write protected"

There is no lock switch on the micro sd card. I don't know what to do...

Just buy a new one they're like $5 for a tb now

I know they are cheap, but i don't wanna if i can get this to work

Try opening a command prompt and typing format X: (where X: is the letter for your drive).

I tried that and it says "cannot format. this volume is write protected. format failed"

Try these steps from the command line:

diskpart
list disk
select disk n (where n is the number of your SD card)
attributes disk clear readonly

when I get to select disk n it says "the disk you specified is not valid. there is no disk selected" of course changing N to whatever my disk letter actually is.

Did you buy fake sd cards?

You have to specify the disk NUMBER that is shown when you do "list disk"

No, it's a Sony. I had it in my (android) phone with music files on it. I then upgraded to a 256G mcroSD like a year ago and have not used it since. Now, all my other SD cards are being used/full and I want to put this one in my camera, but I cannot use it in there until it is formatted.

Not a huge deal as i can buy another one for cheap but I kinda want to make this work somehow if I can.

Ah, see, if i could read. I did specify the disk number, then I typed in "attributes disk clear readonly" and then it says "disk attributes cleared successfully"

now what?

Try a partition manager like MiniTool Partition Wizard.
