I like Luigi' s mansion 1's low key creepy atmosphere and ghost design (the common ghost were brutal to Luigi for the most part), but I like how they straight up psychotic they made king boo in the sequel games. I also found the boss fight design in Luigi 's mansion 3 to be the best in the series. I like LM1 the most, but LM3 comes pretty darn close.

I only beat 2. Have to revisit the first game some day. I got it, Pikmin, and Melee all at once when I got the Gamecube on Christmas in 2001. But I never beat the first two games, or even played them much. I played the hell out of Melee though. 3 looks fun.

I never understood why Dark Moon got so much hate though. I thought it was great.

I only played the forst one. I watchthrough'd the other 2 and they looked better in general but had issues as well. One thing I noticed about the series as a whole is that the first bosses are always extremely impressive and tone-setting. Later bosses just don't do as much for me.

(Spoilers below for anyone not familiar with the games)

Giant baby ghost in giant crib really made shit real after the game was pretty much just a few rooms with generic enemy ghosts. It went from "lol scared-ass luigi acting like a pussy from these goofy ghosts" to "okay I don't blame him for being terrified by this motherfucker."

The spider boss in Dark Moon looked like a brilliant combination of all of the gimmicks and techniques you learn in the first mansion. I was extremely impressed... but the rest of the bosses were nowhere near that quality.

And I think boss quality improved overall in 3 and there were no weak links imo. I loved how they incorporated the uniqueness of LM1's bosses with the "possession" element of Dark Moon's bosses... but the pianist was easily my favorite. You can't go wrong with with possessed T Rex skeleton and a ghost pirate possessing his own ship... but that auditorium fight just blew my mind, from the choreographed phases while he's playing his own fight themes as you deal with the first phases to everything about the final phase. I like how they brought back the individual ghosts for each floor like the portrait ghosts in LM1 instead of just having 1 midboss foght per mansion like Dark Moon... but I think they did a really good job keeping the main bosses at a higher level. It would easily be the best if there was more ability progression, like LM1's element abilities. It didn't need a lot more, just a few new things imo to make things less repetative.

Probably the first, but I really love 3, too.
