Was he right in this act, morally? Yes, even going by the Jedi Code. Sidious had already killed three Jedi Masters, just because he was unarmed doesn't mean he was no longer a threat. Not according to the Jedi Code, but morally yes he was in the right. Sidious was too dangerous to be left alive, as Windu said, so killing him even in a "defenseless" state was justified. No, as Anakin said "it's not the Jedi way." Even if the Senate and the courts were controlled by him, striking down an unarmed man is antithetical to morality. It's Mace Windu. How do you detain someone like that? And how do you get them to said detainment?
