On the plus side, this will wipe out about 98% of Russia/Putin trolls.

Essentially, it will mean that Russia holds a tight control over internet access and they get to pretty much monitor every single thing the people do online. They'll still have internet access, but with The Government eyeballing everything, and blocking anything that they don't like.

Reverting to Stalin era USSR.

So Russia is becoming North Korea 2.0.

This. They're basically copying China's great firewall.

They're short-lifed. Russia as it is would be dead within 30 years and reduced to a powerless ruin of an empire. They're already 70% of the way there. This war is the hail mary to restore the old superpower status and to keep their borders and economy "secure".

Ukraine was poinsed to become an independant energy giant in europe, russia sabotagesd that by taking Crimea and threatening surrounding nations, causing outside countries and compaines ot pull out of plans to start harvesting and exploiting the recently discovered natural gas found in Ukraine.

Ukraine also represents a border issue in the event of open conflict with NATO nations, as Ukraine not being frimly a CSTO(or whatever) ally and Russina puppet state moves back Russia's defensive line to a spot where they can hardly defend against any military action because the area is too wide and accessible. They want to move hteir border back up to Germany and be able to defend a small choke point of entry into "their" territory.

Sadly, without overt NATO nation intervention(causing WWII outright for real) they will take Ukraine.

Russia has seen their population evaporate, and getting worse and worse. Their economy is mostlyproppedup by selling oil and natural gas to Europe, and a major pipeline was going through Ukraine which currently they get taxed billions of dollars on by Ukraine. Crimea was a tactical necessity to stop Ukraine from becoming an actual competitor especially with ukraine's current govt. being way more NATO friendly, but Ukraine also supplied fresh water to Crimea, which they stopped after Russia took it and Crimea is in a deadly drought and soon to be outright famine.

Clock was ticking for Putin and his superpower status as well as Russia's wealth. It is do or die as they know it, so this is what we get. Russia did the same thing to Georgia when they were getting NATO-freindly a while back. For some reason it wasn't as big of a deal then.
