Eh, I hate racists, the confederacy, and dumb southerners who propagate and yearn for it, but the whole DOH/General Lee thing is relatively harmless. The Dukes were some good ol boys and were never meanin no harm by having the rebel flag on their car. Yeah, it's an awful flag on a car named after a confederate general, but it was a dumb ignorant southern thing and not coming from a place of malice I think.

Really this sounds like a parody of what the left thinks anyway. Most don't give a shit about this.

I am not calling a car racist. I am calling any and all uses of Confederate iconography to be racist. I fucking hate that shit and everyone who uses it since they are either ignorant or malicious. You don't get to just remove the meaning of things.

I'm sorry you find me so shallow for viewing a horrific civil war fought over the right to slavery as a really bad thing.

I don't care whether or not McDonald's apologies. I care about continued attempts to sanitize the Confederacy. Surely if the Southern heritage is so great, there has to be other symbols to show your pride.

I was unaware "worst thing" meant "only bad thing in human history. fuck all other victims."

And what is the reasoning for attempting to redefine a symbol of hate? The Confederacy wasn't corrupted by bad actors. Bad actors commissioned it. Why not retire it? What is actually the point of the time and effort to turn a short-lived rogue state into a representation of the good parts of the American South? And why is it so indistinguishable from historical ignorance?

Clearly the statues are doing the opposite of teaching history.

Social Media rewards people that do it because it's the "in" thing to do right now. Just like it's "okay" to hate on Russian people right now because of what the leader in Russia is doing.

Me. And guess what? I had that happy meal. Not the General Lee. I was there the week they gave out Roscos police car. But I grew up in the South. I had Confederate Flags flying over my government buildings, in my amusement parks, and at my school. I was taught it was a symbol of southern pride. And you know what? I was lied to. I was brainwashed into believing that this racist crap wasnt hurting anyone. And I believed that for many years. So if I can do anything to reverse that error (including pointing out how this stuff worms its way inside our homes) then Im going to do it.

The 80s didnt have twitter accounts to post the outrage, and feed watchers to spread it even further.

Theyve been trying to get this flag out for some time. I remember before Superbowl 28, Bruce Smith of the Bills raised a stink about it being displayed over the field. These days it seems the flag does have one useful purpose.

The ones sporting it are IDing themselves to the rest of us.

This is about normalizing racist ideologies and symbols. And I say that as someone who lives next door to a highway named after a slave owner known for beating slaves. People dont even care that theyre diving up and down a tribute for an especially cruel slave owner. Why? Because the road is so old that weve normalized that tribute to a monster.
