The Steam version is probably the most accessible right now, due to them fixing the glaring issues it had, and it being the cheapest official way to play it. The DS speakers are pretty decent for their size. The original composer, Yasunori Mitsuda, even came back to remix and balance the audio for the hardware, as opposed to just trying to do a one-to-one port from the SNES version. The sound quality is good, though you may quibble over the lack of fullness some of the sound effects have (Luminaire being an example of this). The extra content is filler, but it's there and doesn't detract from the original experience. I wouldn't say the translation is better, just more faithful to the original intent. A lot of people over here love the Ted Woolsey translation of the SNES. TBH it suffered that "lost in translation" issue where noting is translated wrong perse, but it was primarily translated with not being wrong in mind, not with making the English version as interesting as the Japanese version. You take interesting Japanese text and turn it into technically correct but less creatively phrased English and you get a pile of mush.
