This game is some straight bullshit

i played it for like 10 minutes. then just played earthbound instead. i do wanna go back and play try it again tho. so how is it bs? how similar to earthbound is it? like an archaic version of it?

I need to start playing this, and Earthbound.

It's obviously barely playtested, if at all. Grindy beginning, piss easy middle, then utter hell in the end.

I'd rather watch a let's play of it.

it's extremely grindy, and there are a lot of random encounters, sometimes literally every couple of steps. There isn't a lot of equipment upgrades to help you boost your defense and some of the late game enemies have really powerful attacks that wipe out your team in one hit. Limited item slots, and no revive items, so you have to rely on your characters having the abilities to revive, which really saps your PP

The beginning is much more manageable once you realize how effective Ninten's buffs/debuffs are. Defense Up and Offense Down turn the Zoo from a bunch of near-fatal encounters into a bunch of exp sacks.

Mt Itoi IS on some bullshit though, but by that point you're richer than Jeff Bezos and can afford lifeup cremes until the cows come home <_<

This is where I am right now. You don't even need money though because there's that one cabin near the Mountain that the guy just hands you lifeupcreams for free. It's still bullshit though, I can barely get through the caves because they sent 3 BlueStarMen at me at a time, usually at least 1-2 of which hit me with a PK Beam

As I understand it most people just run from most battles in that area because thefinal boss is a non-standard battle and you dont need too many level ups

I try not to run because it feels like every time I try to run it fails, and I just get pummelled anyway

oh yes traversing the map is also some shit

and of course it suffers from being a NES game where it doesn't auto target your team's attacks if the monster targeted was already killed

just all around a shit game

the game becomes a lot easier if you get the best armor early. earlygame difficulty kinda peaks against the gang zombie and duncan and the difficulty never really recovers until the final dungeon, and even then half the enemies there are jokes
boomerang is basically the penultimate weapon for every character and you get it unreasonably early for how good it is

i can't imagine struggling with map traversal outside of the encounter rate though. the game is very straight-forward and the game makes it pretty clear where you're meant to go if you actually read dialogue

So I started over for some dumb reason, and here I am with Ninten at level 16 just starting the factory run before Loid joins, several hours into the game.

Some of that was from grinding with Pipi, which sounds way naughtier than it really is.

I remember playing all the way up until the final dungeon without buying coins, because I had no idea that the coins were a type of armor lol

It's the only mother game I've beat

yeah, the way the team you get actually has some synergy and what seems to be a direction in allowing the player to one-round things -- i always thought mother 1 was ahead of its time but a victim of it as well. the game that it is most like is dragon quest 2, and my impression was that that was intentional.

or, just bring Pippi along and grind around outside the zoo until Ninten is level 8 or 9 or so.
