Doesn't the fact that you need a therapist for your relationship signify that you're not with the right person, or you yourself aren't ready to be in a relationship?

Think of their kids

That's fair. However I think it still means that you're not with the right person

If you're staying together just for the kids, then you are going to screw up their mental development by exposing them to the idea that even if you don't love someone, or just plain hate them, that you should stay with them no matter what.

I like the idea that some couples try to work things out instead of pulling the plug once something changes. But yeah I don't know how successful it is in general.

There are people who like fixing relationships and people who like cutting the cord and starting fresh. I'm definitely the former

the right person doesn't mean being exactly perfect all the time. that's just a myth. the "right person" is the one that you can actually solve these things with and go through these journeys of repair and recovery with success and continue to be happy together after.

and being "ready" for a relationship comes and goes, and the concept is similar to "working on it" when you're already in one.

life isn't a fairytale

Sometimes a relationship needs a mediator. People are hard headed. I've seen so many unhappy marriages that could be flipped right if they just communicated better.
