Vulpini are literally a division of canines.
"The Caninae are known as canines, and include domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes and other extant and extinct species." As other people have already stated in this topic.

In any event, they probably chose something related to an outright dog because they already had a fire-type dog (Growlithe) and didn't want for it to feel like a repeat. Which means whenever they get to the horse in the Zodiac, they might end up going with something else in the Equidae family like a tapir or zebra since we already have fire horses in Ponyta/Rapidash.

You mean the generation where you could catch ZERO new Fire-types before the Elite 4 if you didn't pick Chimchar? And after the Elite 4 it was literally just Magmortar and Heatran?
