It's when it's all mixed together in the pot.

separate, because leftovers refrigerate and reheat better when they're not all together. you leave pasta in an acidic sauce and it starts to fall apart.

Didn't know it was a thing; might have to try it myself as I hate washing dishes so the less I use the better lol

I've only ever made it mixed up, but I boil the noodles in one pot and the sauce in another. Then I strain the noodles and mix them into the sauce and let it simmer for a bit.

separate because it stores better, and also because when i or anyone in my family makes marinara sauce and meatballs, we make multiple types of pasta to choose from, usually including spaghetti, penne or rotini, and zucchini noodles, (and a few times black bean spaghetti) and everyone is free to mix and match.

You gotta cook your pasta in the sauce, at least briefly.

I did it once in a slow cooker.
Honestly I kinda sucked on the first night, but it was pretty good on the second night.

It was an experiment.
But I don't feel the need to cook it that way again.

I wouldn't mind cooking them together, but my family is too picky, with people wanting various combinations of sauce and meat to have one pot that everyone would actually eat.

Hmm...nah. Americans got it right: cook both separately and put the sauce on top of the pasta when it's time to eat.

Pretty much this.

Unless you're gonna put the sauce and spaghetti in a pan, cover it in cheese, and bake it for a bit. Thats top level spaghetti.
