From what I understand, a large amount of PS1 disc space is taken up by FMVs.

On the third disc you can also explore the entire overworld and do any side stuff you want to focus on

It's not like the entire disc is just one dungeon lol

But I did it. Planet saved. The end.

IX

maybe X if you like meg ryan a lot.

and you can literally backtrack through the crater and save on the map. there's no way to save after you beat the game, but you're not stuck in midgar. <_<

Play them in order. People have very bad opinions on what games are good. They're all good.

You got an item that allows you to spawn a save point anywhere in Northern Crater. Usually people put it either before the branching paths or before the final battle.

You'll just have to describe the ending to people in detail. :) And, as noted, there was a save you could have made in the North Crater (although it's kinda buggy, so maybe it's best that you didn't). You also could have saved on the world map.

Among the other games:

FF8 is full of highs and lows and it's always been polarizing. The storyline (while fairly epic) is nonsensical/ridiculous at times and the characters are often focused on a high-school level romance. The gameplay is good, but it has a relatively high learning curve. A lot of people who played it right after FF7 didn't like it, but it's strong if you can overlook its warts.

FF9 is kind of the opposite of FF8. It's a consistently quality experience that's a throwback to older FFs, although it doesn't really have the same highs (or lows) as FF8. It's style (and early plot) makes it feel...targeted towards a younger audience, particularly early in the game, but it grows as you continue. Good game. Not as gritty as FF7, certainly.

FFX/X-2 HD $25. FFX is my second favorite in the series: epic story and solid, if slowish, gameplay. The main complaint some people have is that the protagonist can get whiny at times, but it's good overall. Takes a while to REALLY get going in plot/gameplay terms. X2.......yeah, not really recommended, although the gameplay is OK.

FFXII: The Zodiac Age $25. Not my cup of tea. It's what you would get it you turned FF into a single-player MMO and gave it a dry storyline. Some people like it.

FFXV: Pocket Edition HD $12. XV is kind of a hot mess. They did the small things (details, party interactions, camping) right and the big things (battle, storyline) wrong.

Was I the only one to recommend playing the SNES games before playing more of the later games? XD

One of the reasons why is that a lot of the games make references to earlier titles and also do variations of existing mechanics in those games. The NES/SNES games tend to be faster plays than the later games, too.

I mean, if a person is pretty certain they're going to play through the whole series then yeah they should go back to FF4 sooner than later to see the basis for the series.

Buuut I don't think most people want a commitment that big, so seeking out they ones that they would most like is fine and good (until such point that they get REALLY hooked). That said, FF6 still rates up there with the 7-10 peak for anyone who's willing to do (high quality) 2D.

I love 4 and 6, but 7-9 is the true sweet spot imo. Just going with my gut. Also I dont consider them later games, more like mid life games. The later ones are anything after 10, for me

Now that TC has beaten the game, what were your favorite music tracks?

I remember not liking the Main Theme/ World Map theme cuz it took too long to build up, but upon my 2nd attempt to play it, it grew on me, and now I love it.

Honestly I know this is a hot take but video game music is pretty much never something I like so I play 90% of games with no volume. I turned the music on during important cutscenes (the really animated ones) but otherwise didnt pay any attention.

the music during the final Sephiroth fight is intense. I also like JENOVA and Aeris Theme.

Yeah! I think I remember there being a very piano-y piece, I think during the scene where we explore clouds consciousness or maybe when everyone comes back after going home to figure out what theyre fighting for. I couldnt find it during my quick scrub through the soundtrack, but I remember liking it too. might be confusing it with Aeris theme though tbh

I can understand that. Ive never been good at playing games because I get bored really easily and I think a big part of that is having to both see and hear the thing, on top of interacting with it. Playing games with the sound off lets me focus my hearing on something else, which paradoxically lets me focus on the game more? Haha that probably doesnt make any sense. I will usually listen to the game during opening and ending scenes, though. And if it interests me enough (this game did, for example), Ill also listen during big boss fights and major cutscenes.

I maybe misspoke. I dont mind the music in video games because its video game music, I just dont like having to focus on it while Im trying to focus on the game. I like a few vg soundtracks, and might occasionally listen to them while Im doing other stuff, but when Im playing the tv is on mute. I might give the ff7 soundtrack a full listen since it seems like you guys like it so much.

I also listen to a lot of tv and movies on mute too. Not as much as video games, but maybe 1/3-2/5 of tv I watch with no sound. This is especially true for shows that are highly episodic.

Ill listen to something else instead (or have a conversation or do chores etc), watching while reading the subtitles.

For me, the music adds a lot of the emotion and outright "makes" a few games. FF4, for example, would be....greatly diminished without sound IMO. 2D guys walking around without much text aren't otherwise very gripping. But the music was pretty great.

I would have said the game about FF7, to be honest, although there's more text and the 3D characters, while blocky, can get more emotions across. Did you not have the sound on during Cosmo Canyon or the blood-trail scene or the Forgotten City or anything? Ouch, although I guess it makes me happy that the game is still enjoyable that way. You at least turned the sound on for the Aeris scene, right? It sounds like you did the boss battles, which is good: those are great tracks.

It would be interesting to see what you think with the tracks out of context. The midis are pretty low quality, but they usually hit a homerun with the emotion that they're trying to communicate in the moment.

I'm not ragging on you, just to be clear: whatever works for you works for you. But I don't think I could play that way.

i can understand that. To me, repetitive bgm makes it less compelling and more, uh, idk tiring I guess. Like I could rather be listening to a podcast rn. So I do!

not for anything in cosmo canyon. TotA I turned the music on when I started defending those crystal stairs, and definitely during the death scene. I only had music during what spoke to me as major boss fights. This was fights with Weapon, Sephiroth, Rufus, Dyne maybe a few others. Pretty sure never if the boss was a monster.

Just because I can't let this go, here are a few to try should you happen to find them somewhere. :)

The Opening/Bombing Mission. You listened to this, right?
Mako Reactor. Sets a good tone.
Underneath the Rotting Pizza. Creeping through Midgar slums
Red's Theme/Cosmo Canyon.
Great Warrior. Played during the Seti part.
Trail of Blood. Added to the weirdness of that scene.
Cait Sith's Theme. Kinda fun.
Cid's Theme: the rocket (or other heroic) sequences
You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet. Forgotten City Pre-Aeris: something real bad is coming...
Forested Temple.

...and all of the battle music I think you already heard. It's kinda weird stuff, but it really worked for me in context. Maybe not you?
