everyone thought its gonna be easy for them to take the country but theyre exposing themselves of how weak they are and are just embarrassing themselves to the world. You think at the end they would just nuke the hell out of ukraine? I really thought at this day and age, war would just be nonstop bombing and troops are only deployed on the ground when its over.

They don't need to nuke Ukraine.

You also have chemical agents and any number of other weapons that could be used to kill off defenders. There are, however, consequences beyond just casualties and damaged infrastructure when you deploy such weapons. Modern warfare against world powers is not about whether said powers can take a city, but whether they are willing to utilize the methods needed to take it.

If they nuke Ukraine, they're opening themselves up to the risk of atomic annihilation themselves. The idea of mutually assured destruction, the knowledge that to fire off a nuclear weapon is not only going to doom the entire world but to assure your own immediate death, is intended to drive the idea of deterrence. Lol they certainly havent flat out failed already. People in the West addicted to 24/7 news just expect a war to finish out in a matter of days. When even very fast wars are a couple months.

Maybe back off and come up with some other strategy.

They've been trying to infiltrate their ranks dressed in Ukranian uniforms and keep getting caught.

I had anticopated that half of Ukraine would be conquered in a day, and on the next day, Zelenskyy is deposed and a Lukashenko-like puppet installed. Cue Russia then leering at the west for its weakness and eyeing another country to swallow up into his empire. Heck, I was 100% certain he'd be taking Moldova before the weekend.

But now, on the fourth day, at the end of the week, Russia's military is plagued by fuel and ammo shortages, they've failed to achieve aerial superiority, their assaults are disorganized and frequently thwarted, casualties number in the thousands, hundreds of vehicles have been destroyed, and all the major cities remain in Ukrainian hands. In the eyes of the world, Russia's practically overnight turned from an dangerous military power to a shaky paper tiger pariah state that's to be shunned and isolated, with even its allies calling Russia out or staying quiet.

There's just no feasible way Putin can spin this war with Ukraine and global humiliation into a victory. His army miltiary do it, and his PR machine can't do it. He's already lost, and any chance to save face is by now long gone. It's just a question of how far he'll double down and how much men and material he's willing to chuck at Ukraine to get his ever fleeting victory before he'll throw down the towel.
And that is what worries me. Not that he finally accepts that he's lost, but what he'll do as a "fuck you" as he flips the proverbial chess board.

Now I'm not saying he'll start flinging nukes like confetti, or strike a western target he despises the most. It's not a button on his desk that separates cozy today and bottlecap currency tomorrow. Anyone down the chain from the order to the launch can choose not to follow through with it. Most of all, Putin's oligarch buddies will certainly get rid of him to ensure their wealth won't be destroyed in a nuclear holocaust.

However, Putin can do a lot with that aren't nukes. He could be mad enough to start massive terror bombings on Ukraine's population centers, maybe even use chemical and biological weapons.
A nuclear strike wille ensure MAD; everything else, won't.

Russia, while taking exponentially more losses much more quickly than expected, havent lost; by sheer force, they can and will wear Ukraine down.

What may be the saving grace of the Ukrainians are both the tumult in Moscow and Putins fear of over committing his forces to one border, leaving him exposed elsewhere.

Unless anyone actually steps in to help Ukraine with actual troops instead of just supplies, its just a matter of time. And even if Russia didnt nuke them, I dont think carpet bombing is off the table just yet

Larger by sheer manpower? Yes. However most of Russia's military hardware is remnants from the Cold War that barely functions, most of their soldiers are conscripts that don't even want to fight, and they're having big issues manufacturing new weapons and ammo.

I read that if this war lasts even 10 days that Russia will basically be out of ammo.

I think that would be probably one of the worst war crimes.

Also, if people think Russia wouldn't use nukes on their own neighbours, remember that they were testing nuclear bombs and fallout radiation on their own people.

They were likely planning on a two to three day war with a quick seizure of the capitol and surrender from Ukrainian forces.

That's when the fighting was hardest and the(Russian especially) body count was growing the fastest.

They likely sent a significant amount of well trained and armed troops to attempt to end this quickly in a surprise and sudden attack, but the fact that the Ukrainians have held them back was entirely unexpected.

They likely are running on the back-end of their more lower quality army that was ready, or quickly assembling Frontline troops to support the invasion.

There should be absolutely no reason they'd be calling on the Chechen army for support, the fact that they're doing it means they've likely run into manpower or weaponry issues and actually require support. The fact that the Chechens lost a general(I believe) within the first two hours is pretty shocking for all, too.

I think the Russians are severely outmanned for this particular invasion at this time, and they'd likely need a lot more time to get fully prepared for a second large assault.

But I'm not in the military so maybe I'm wrong. But that's what I'm seeing from the outside looking in.

They're also resorting to disgusting war crimes and banned weapons like butterfly mines(they're colorful mines meant to attract children), dressing as the opposition(and getting caught, scum), killing civilians(there is a horrifying video of a family of 4-6 lying in a ditch with a dog sitting by their corpses, inhuman scum did it).

I feel like they're getting desperate. The Chechens offering huge bounties for Ukranian kills is also telling, as they likely don't have the capital to support the bounties and also likely aren't even getting the kills they need to please daddy Putin.

They have no supply chain. The war was very poorly thought out and was essentially all-in on Ukraine surrendering nearly immediately.

Things like the Snake Island defiance ended up being a much bigger deal in hindsight because it forced the Russian Warship to waste tons of ammo shelling 13 dudes and it's not a trivial matter to restock a warship especially with a navy as shit as Russia's.

This is an understatement. People living around the original drops have much higher rate of cancer than the world average for at least 40 years.
