I think I'm in need of a new laptop. I'm currently using a 2-in-1 with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. Both are not enough.

What I'd like to use my new station for is:

-Occassional Illustrator/Photoshop projects, sometimes maybe video projects on Premiere Pro/After Effects
-Playing Steam games*
-General online fuckery

*I don't play Steam on my current laptop mainly because of how hot it gets and being afraid of overheating. I'm more of a console gamer, and don't really have a place for a full desktop, so I personally prefer having a laptop/2-in-1 that can be portable

Advice on what to look for here? I'm thinking 16GB RAM or maybe 32GB, and preferably at least 1TB SSD, seems like these are pretty expensive. What else should I look out for?

I have a Dell XPS 13 with 16 GB RAM that I really like; it's got a good combo of portability and power. It's not gonna play AAA titles anytime soon, but I've found it more than capable for indie titles and audio editing.

If you're planning on gaming I wouldn't get a laptop. Gaming laptops are usually a ripoff. They often overheat and always have shit battery lives.

I would build a PC. You can get a decent one for around the same price. I would only go laptop if you absolutely have to be mobile with it.

Yeah I might try to get something that will play Steam games that aren't too heavy. Like I probably wouldn't expect to play Cyberpunk or Horizon Forbidden West, but could play something like FFVI Pixel remaster.

I just don't really have a station for it in our current house and even if we move, I like to have the laptop to be able to work on things, surf the net, or play a lightweight game while watching TV on the sofa with the wife.

While I'd like to play anything on the laptop, I think gaming is probably lesser of a priority than some of the other type of Adobe program type projects I might want to do. Or hell, even any other creative software type things that I may want to get into at some point (which I do like to be mobile for)

Depends on your price range, higher end laptops can definitely do all of that but you could be looking at 2k+ for really top of the line. Either way I'd look into the Lenovo Legion. It has incredible battery life for the AMD spec'd ones it runs very cool and one with a RTX 3060/3070 will play anything you'd need. Those usually go around 1.5k while the 3080 is the 2k+ I mentioned.

This is a signature to draw attention away from the fact that I don't have a signature.

I don't game too much on Steam because like you I'm a console gamer, but to give a sense of the capability: Dragon Quest XI was totally smooth on lower settings, Hitman 2016 chugged.

Any tips on where to purchase?

There's some deals directly from Lenovo, or should I go through a big box store? My current 2-in-1 was purchased from Best Buy through the open box session.

How is Amazon for buying laptops?
