My ancestors left a shtetl in Orynin near Kamianets-Podilskyi in what is now western Ukraine at the turn of the 20th century. They came to NYC seeking a better life and to escape the anti-Jewish pogroms of the Russian Empire.

Anyone who didn't leave then was lost in the shuffle of the post-WW1 borders, the Holodomor, and finally wiped out in the first massacre of the Holocaust.

I don't share this story often, but I was compelled to after speaking with my boss today. He was born in Ukraine and still has family in Kherson. This is a horrifying time for him.
