when there are a lot of Americans with degrees that are unemployed

He is specifically talking about the tech industry

Apparently, he thinks that Indians shouldnt be getting those high paying jobs because they dont belong in this country. Instead, he thinks that the unemployed Americans in the USA with degrees should be first priority for all the jobs here.

not gonna lie, this dude seems like a straight up jerk but I do wonder at times why there are many Americans with degrees that are unemployed or underemployed. I even knew people with masters degrees who worked minimum wage at the airport

As it turns out, the kind of immigrants who work in tech are smarter than your average American (who has a degree). They're paid the same amount, and it's because there is a lack of domestic talent.

Wait is this really the case? Some of those immigrants from India and China (to name a few examples) are smarter than Americans here with degrees?

I also thought that how smart or how good you are didnt matter that much in tech either as long as you have the right people backing you

Because many were sold the 'College is the only way to career success' lie as a kid. Once they've gotten themselves hopelessly into debt... they don't need to keep up the illusion anymore.

I'm pretty sure India and China put out the the smartest people each year in some subjects. I think there was some pretty harsh backlash a few years ago about colleges picking too many Indian and Chinese teens to give scholarships to, so they made it harder for them to get in. They still did, though. Might have just been one news story I'm thinking about, too.

What degrees do they have exactly? Cause a liberal arts major with no in demand skills sn't going to cut it. Indians are going into tech jobs

Do you have specific examples??

I can give you the examples I had during my airport days

I knew people with civil engineering and computer science degrees (one of em masters) who only ended up working as an airline customer service agent

I also knew one who was a baggage handler who had a masters from USC

B1 visas are used to keep wages down in spite of market demands. There is nothing wrong with hiring immigrants, but the motive for doing so in most of the cases you've mentioned is ulterior.

That doesn't mean that the people hired shouldn't make the most of their opportunity though. I don't think anybody capable of rational thought would lay the blame on the people receiving the visas.

You have to remember that a lot of those individuals with those degrees are expecting a certain salary to compensate for the money and time invested into those degrees.

They want X amount and a company is only willing to pay Y. They get a bruised ego and rather cut their nose to spite their face.

Meanwhile here they are making minimum wage doing a job they didn't go to school for.

Whereas immigrants will take those jobs at any cost for a multitude of reasons. For the work visa (if needed), the pay they are offered is more than what they would be making back home anyway and to build experience and networking as well.

The jobs are out there - and the individuals you are referencing aren't being denied the jobs, they're not accepting them because they don't feel they are being compensated appropriately which is probably true as well.

I guess it depends where in tech. My husband works in IT for an insurance company. Specifically in AI development. His brain trust of people working are not even based in the US. He was hiring people with PHDs in mathematics. He says he can easily teach them the IT skills they need to do the job, but the understanding of high level of mathematics was not something that could be taught on the job.

I do prefer if an American company doesn't outsource jobs outside the country. Now if they are a legal immigrant in country and they are qualified then go for it.

I do get a laugh out of the ones who go out of their way to convince you they are American and in America though. They will have such a strong foreign accent then the most basic white person name ever and claim (if asked) to be set up somewhere in a well known American city then can't answer when you bring up the area code doesn't match. I only fuck with telemarketers like that cause fuck telemarketing

He is right but somehow, he blames that on the Indians who take that opportunity to work here

like. the fuck? shouldnt the anger be directed toward the CEOs, COOs, and all the people in charge on top who dont want to hire domestically?

This isn't exactly wrong, but the important part is missing.
Work visas are functionally indentured servitude. Lose your job, get deported - and I believe the H1B visa is even tied to the specific employer.

Damn I didnt think of that. It can be another big reason why they prefer them over Americans

why do you think Indians and Chinese are uneducated? typically they will actually have a MS in computer science, sometimes only a BS. It's the same level of education we have..... and it's not cheap. they get the jobs because they can solve hard algorithm questions which 99% of people will fail

that's why there's a "labor shortage" in tech, all the major companies want the top 1% and well, 99% of people don't fit in the bucket
