I forgot that Zero Dawn came out right before breath of the Wild which got all the hype in 2017 so it was overlooked despite being great. And now Forbidden West is coming a week before Elden Ring so the same thing will happen again. At least Elden isnt mainstream so Forbidden West has a chance this time, at least until breath of the Wild 2 drops later this year.

breath of the wild was so good. i did play hzd and enjoyed it but felt so lacklustre to explore imo. im not buying hfw. i already bought elden ring which i may or may not enjoy it depends. was playing outward prior to buying elden ring which was pretty cool but hate having to travel like an hour to get to places wtf (no fast travel and mounts lol).

Err Horizon Zero Dawn has sold 20 million copies. It did pretty good.

They have 27 million sales across the entire series, including Bloodbourne and Sekiro. Pokemon Sword and Shield have like 23 million alone. Sun and Moon have 25. GTA 5 has 160 million. Breath of the Wild has 27 million. Smash Brothers came out 2 years ago and hit 27. Last of 2 did 4 million opening weekend, Spiderman and God of War did just over 3 opening weekend. I'm not saying they don't do good numbers, but you guys are over estimating their franchise in terms of exposure and sales numbers. Being well known in gaming circles doesn't mean they're well known in general and they are thus niche titles.

For a new IP it absolutely was. Look at how mediocre the first entry for a bunch of modern series were like Assassins Creed, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc. and look at how massively they improved the series as it went on. maybe you didn't like those changes, but it can't be denied that there was massive improvement from where they started. Horizon started off stronger than any of them did so we can only imagine how far the series will go if they invest in it.

Souls series ain't niche anymore. Maybe with Demon and the first 2 Dark Souls. Dark Souls 3 sold very well and so did Bloodborne. Almost every inch of the internet is talking about Elden Ring and how it's the best game ever (funny enough, like BotW).

Horizon will still sell well, but no doubt that Elden Ring will play a role in deterrent from some of Horizon sales. Not gonna get either until I know that the PC version is optimized because steam reviews for Elden RIng are not looking too hot. At least it isn't a Cyber Punk 2077 fiasco level.

Halo 3 sold 14.5 million and as a franchise has 70 million in sales. Sekiro and Dark Souls 3 combined make up 15 million in sales leaving the other 4 games with an average of 2.5 million each. And 1 and 2 only hit those numbers due to being remastered and put on later generation consoles. Prior to that, demons souls did 1 million, dark souls and bloodbourne did like 2 million.

These are not bad sales at all, but you guys are over estimating them.

The games are getting more popular as they go on. Dark Souls is only a smidge over 10 years old.

This is the thing ya'll don't get, being big in gaming is not the same thing as being mainstream. And even then it won't continue because Soulsbourne game are intentionally made for a certain niche type of player in the gaming community. That's what makes Halo, Call of Duty, Resident Evil and Pokemon and such different and actually mainstream. You can mention it to a non gamer who can't tell you anything about gaming and they'll still know it's a game that you're talking about. Mention soulsbourne and they won't.

When people who aren't interested in the niche are still aware of it is how I define it. Like people who don't know about rap but know who Kanye and Drake are. I can't tell you shit about Kim Kardashian but I know who she is. Know not a single lyric from Adelle or Taylor Swift but I know who they are. Because they're big enough influences that people outside of the target demographic take notice.

Call of duty and FIFA are among the top 5 selling games every year for like a decade and a half straight lol. And Resident Evil has like 8 live action movies and Netflix specials and shit. Resident Evil established zombie culture in mainstream horror for decades and had no challengers on that front until Walking Dead showed up and refused to die. Romero did it first sure, but that was in the 60's. As time went on, they became caricatures more than anything. Used for comedy instead of scares and resident evil is a big part of the reason why that changed.

Resident Evil is mainstream because it has had almost a dozen movies with the same name. The live-action series have their own completely separate niche as a garbage franchise.

... People are probably buying a PS4 for CoD and FIFA though. Though there's also another group for Madden and maybe MLB The Show? Though these groups also likely have quite a bit of overlap.
