With the ever-growing trend of diversity in media, you may think that representation is as simple as including women and minority characters. But to a community of Youtube video essayists and WordPress philosophers, it's much more complicated.

"The thing is," says youtuber TruthCrunch, "even more important than doing representation is doing representation correctly." According to Mr. Crunch, the social and cultural damages of incorrect representation are far more dangerous than exclusion.

"Let's say you want a gay or trans character. If you acknowledge that they're gay, it's pandering. But if you don't, it's tokenism. Members of cinema intelligencia are still trying to figure out how to have LGBTLMNOPBBQ(sic) characters without falling into those traps, so until then, the best thing to do would be to just not have any gay characters."

If gender and sexual minorities were a complex subject for fiction, blogger DownWithLarson reminds us that women can be just as inscrutable. "The trick to having proper female representation is to make them like Ripley from Alien. It's such a simple thing, but we keep getting movies like Captain Marvel, where the females aren't anything like Ripley from Alien."

But perhaps the most difficult inclusion of all is race and ethnicity. Redditor GooseFucker007 explains that "The worst thing you can do for Black people is mention racism. The last thing I want, that anyone wants really, is for white people to feel uncomfortable by depictions of racism, and then have that discomfort lead to them becoming real racists."

GooseFucker007 assures us his concern extends beyond the Black community. "It's very hard being at the forefront of Racial Justice In Hollywood. Whenever a movie like Black Panther comes out, it's up to me to remind people that Asians exist. And whenever a movie like Shang Chi comes out, it's up to me to remind people that China is bad. The work never stops, it's all so tiring."

Among these and other intellectuals on social media, the most diverse ideas are those on how to handle diversity. But most agree on one thing: that the real bigots are those that call out bigotry, and that progress can't be made by anyone who actually wants progress to happen.
