C/D: Apple is a garbage company that scams the tech illiterate.

C. Is it still an open secret or is it common knowledge now?

Apple makes very good products for people who don't want to worry about their products. You want a laptop that does all the stuff you need it to really well, and don't want to deal with crap like "is my Windows updated?" or "do I have the right Drivers installed" then you buy a MacBook. If you want a phone that can mix nicely with all the stuff you want, and you don't need to worry about? you can buy an iPhone.

Especially since nowadays, every competing company has just made their stuff more expensive than it needs to be, so there isn't really even much of an Apple tax.

The bad part about apple is every other tech company are also apple sheep, so when Apple makes a ****-tier decision like ditching the headphone jack, every other company feels the need to jump in because now they can also make these blatant anti-consumer moves and nobody will care because Apple did it already and nobody got upset.

Don't they push "updates" to older generation models that make them slower so that consumers would be forced to upgrade? Not that I would really know anyway. I stopped using apple products after that one update that rendered 90% of my apps useless.

I know people that are still using iPhone 6S and 7's as their daily drivers with no issues.

On the flip side, android models are supported for like 2-3 years at most, forcing you to upgrade if you use your phone for anything youd want safe. You can use an iPhone se for 8 or more years fine

Nothing wrong with apple products if you prefer a laid out user experience. apple software is compatible with everything else that's apple made so you never need to worry about those kinds of issues.

That being said, Android offers a tenfold level of user customization, so if you're more invested and tech savvy then you can make an android phone fit your personal taste and be leagues better than the closest apple equivalent.

Apple products are excellent. For all the bitching about planned obsolescence, iPhones last longer than any other smartphone. And Ill take a well supported Unix-based system over Windows any day. Even free Linux distributions are more stable. I think all of this Apple = for tech illiterate is just people being defensive about their operating systems and tech products of choice rather than any sort of objective argument.

I mean Android owners who want to do nothing but bash Apple is just as cultish as Apple stans.

But that goes against your narrative.

The apple tax is still real. I just bought a Google Pixel 6 for $599 with a 6.4" screen. If I wanted to get into that ballpark I'd need to be looking at the iPhone 13 Pro Max with a 6.7" screen, which costs $1,099.

That out of the way, if people enjoy being in the Apple ecosystem more power to them. It's not my place to tell people how to spend their money.

That sums it up pretty well, use whatever you want to and let other people be. Cell phone wars in my opinion are even cornier than console wars.

This.

They make good products, but they often prioritize form over function while removing features that were available on previous iterations.

I would have agreed with you 10 years ago. While Apple is still fashionable, it's not nearly as niche and cool as it once was. Everyone and their grandmother owns an iOS device these days.

Apple is completely overpriced. They use proprietary hardware and you can't upgrade their systems.

I kinda feel like Apple has been unusually price and hardware competitive lately, both in laptops and cellphones.

And they've been moving away from proprietary BS, which is nice too. Now everything is standardized except iPhone.

Their laptops are actually cheaper than equivalent Windows models, which is kind of weird to think about.

Where they fall apart is on the high end - their hardware is extremely good from a cost:quality ratio on the low end, but it drops dramatically at the $2k+ price points. Windows laptops above $2k typically have mid or high end GPUs and 240hz+ screens.

Yeah, everything but iPhone is USB-C (iPad, Macbooks, etc). And they've already said they're considering moving iPhone to USB-C because Lightning can't meet high-speed charging standards that huge cellphone batteries need now.

I prefer Android but I'm willing to acknowledge that iPhone has really spanked Android in the high end price point range, especially with their non-pro models being significantly cheaper than equivalent Android phones. And that doesn't even factor in the fact that Apple is like two years ahead of Android in CPU performance. IIRC the iPhone 12 still outperforms the Snapdragon 8 (the latest high end Snapdragon).

It's kind of silly.

Thing is, I really don't like iOS. Ironically it reminds me a lot of Early Android - cluttered, too many submenus, unintuitive gestures, etc.

Mixed. Apple makes high quality products for the most part but they charge way too much for them. Plus, updates killed their own products. Im not sure if they still do that though

That's a fair point.

I will say though that at $200 per year, with 3 years of updates it's still in the range of being competitive. Chances are I will want to move on with technological innovations in 3 years and buy a new phone at that point, while trading in my previous model.

If you are really going to keep a phone for 7+ years the iPhone is probably the better buy for sure.

Its also worth adding that if you plan on using your iPhone for 7 years, you'll almost definitely at least need to replace the battery.

I think the reason Apple hasn't gone to USB-C for iPhone yet is they still seem to be aiming to get a portless iPhone.
