because prebuilts something have builds where they have the GPU at a decent price and if there's any other components that you would like then that's just an extra bonus

Custom builds. Prebuilts that are mass produced will never be worth it unless you just want a basic computer. Custom builds on the other hand have always been viable if you don't mind paying a few extra hundred

Right now though you would pay far more just building one so yeah get a custom build from somewhere reputable

Custom builds used to be more viable and would cost hundreds less than prebuilds if you were comfortable putting the components together yourself.

Custom is prebuilt it's just more like buying a car where you pick the options you want instead of just buying the computer outright.

That makes me suspicious that they're getting the cards second-hand

They are not. They buy wholesale from the same places that people like Best Buy get them.

Oh my bad. I thought custom in that context meant building it from the ground up with individually purchased parts.

I think the base price was 2700 for the whole thing but I added quite a bit of stuff. It was just a 1TB SSD+1TB HDD but I switched to 1+4 for instance, and got an i9-11900k instead of a 10900, and got a surge protector and a really nice glass case + professional wiring

I cancelled my cyberpower pc order after hearing the horror stories. One these days I will take the hour long drive to Microcenter and buy all the components needed for a build.

I just did. Got tired of waiting for a 3000 series and went AMD instead since Micro Center had them in stock.

i think the next pc ill buy i'll get a custom built

im fine with picking out components myself, but im not enjoying actually putting it together. particularly getting cables into tight places into small plugs i can barely reach, or a million cables through one cable management hole thats right above the case headers so gotta be careful otherwise you'll unplug the power button and shit like that

I bought a custom pre-build with a 3060 last March because the price was much more reasonable than buying a GPU separately (and given that we're now almost a year on and GPU prices are still crazy I feel very good with that decision).

The build quality is better than I would have done myself and the price was reasonable. I have no regrets or complaints at all.

The only thing to keep in mind is that a lot of pre-builts cheap out on components that a lot of people don't really think about like case, PSU, RAM speed, etc... Make sure to do the proper research on exactly what you're buying first.

Prebuilts always seem to skimp on the power supply. And sometimes the storage.

Luckily those are pretty cheap and easy to upgrade if you need to.
