If I got the job then of course I will thank them.

If I didn't then good day and goodbye.

Let's make a deal. Candidates will send thank you notes as long as companies follow up with everybody they interviewed, which means letting people know they didn't get the job instead of going the no contact route.

Not if youre part of a large candidate pool, like initial vetting interviews that take 15-20 minutes, or part of a bad interview. But, if youre part of a small select group, and the process went well? Definitely. Their first choice might end up turning the job down and potential employers notice little things like this. It can help separate two close candidates as well.

The possibility that most people don't, and that it is something within the realm of what is acceptable and beneficial, is why you should if you have any reasonable ability or opportunity to do so.

When you read the advice on how to write a thank you note, it says mention something substantive you appreciated or enjoyed talking about (that they brought up). Yeah, that was tough when I did that, but now that I think of it it's not just sappiness. Because you're going to remind them about something that you think went well in the interview. You choose the echo.
