One of two reasons. The first, and less likely, is that they just want to see the cause succeed and don't care about drawing attention to their support for it. I've made some donations on GoFundMe and stuff. I always do it private. I don't want everyone being able to see that I donated and how much. I'm also not looking for a "thanks" from the person either.
