We've lost so many people to it. People like Robin Williams and Chester Bennington. Yet when someone is really going through it, the average person says "just get over it" and unfriends them if they don't comply.

I think this partially boils down to a weird dualism in society's belief about the brain/mind, so people have trouble viewing mental illness the same way they might view other illnesses.

It's not uncommon for adhd to display similar symptoms to depression.

nah, if anything it's taken a bit too seriously and every setback or negative emotion gets interpreted as (or worse yet, blamed on) being depressed

agreed. Mitch Hedberg did a good joke on this that goes something like

"alcoholism is the only disease people will yell at you for having. 'god dammit Otto, you're an alcoholic' seems okay but 'god dammit Otto, you have Lupus' doesn't". but i feel like you can replace "alcoholism" with "mental illness" and it still mostly works.

people are frequently ashamed to admit they have a mental illness, but you don't see that same thing with physical diseases like diabetes, really

I'd like to see people show a little more empathy and not dismiss it as "not a big deal."

I think people are jaded at this point. It's so common for someone to claim depression that people are like, whatever. No one cares until someone commits suicide, and then that caring only lasts a minute.

It is in my case. I've told multiple people in my family and they just glance over it and talk about something else.

What will do you do after you've seen it?
Are you going to try to get a picture to commemorate it or just go "Ah that was nice. I'm decently content with that."

I think some of the awareness of mental health has actually been worse for depression being taken seriously. It's good that mental health is taken seriously, but so many services now are focused around people who are down and/or struggling for a period, that people with chronic mental health issues keep going into the system, getting diagnosed as "just in a rut" and being prescribed mindfulness and exercise, and doing this on a loop.

Or that could be anecdotal.

At work one evening, I had been yelled at all night long by the guest's and it was a very busy night which tends to give me panic attacks.

When the next shift came in they could sense something was wrong and asked me about it. I told them it had just been a rough night, which was just made worse by my depression and social anxiety. "Oh please, that's nothing like what I have to deal with! I'm on Thyroid medication! You think I want to be here when I feel bad!?" Then the other one chimed in "Thyroid? Shoot, that's nothing. He said anxiety. But his isn't anything like MINE is. I was on medication for it for a while. If I can get over it, so can you guys!" Then the first one responded "Hah! You think I don't get anxious!? Sometimes I get so frustrated over things and take it out anyone whose near me. If anyone has Anxiety issues it's ME!!!"

So, I just left while the two of them were trying to one up each other.

Society and western culture has a hand in this. There is too much emphasis on happiness and success. We're too individualistic too. So when you have all of those expectations in this connected and social-media driven society, you have more people with depression. And you have people that don't understand why.

Not to mention isolation. We are more isolated than ever.

mental health care in the US is super fucked

I've learned to cope with anxiety/depression to some degree
Medicine and therapy have lessened the severity but I don't think there's any hope of me fixing the root of the problems

Not comfortable at all talking to people about my mental health

The one is the most God awful person I've ever met. Which is saying a lot. She's the most self centered entitled person I think is possible.

The other one is nice and I actually like her. I guess I just can't mention any struggles without her wanting to one up it. Which kind of sucks.

There's a newer coworker who is very obviously struggling mentally. She seems in the verge of a breakdown every night. I try to listen and support her any way I can, but she always gives me the "You don't know what it's like!" response... Yes, yes I do. She seems to think that her abusive husband is unique and that no one else could ever understand feeling trapped. Do I just roll with it and let her get it out of her system.
