Which?

Assume the first game tells a standalone story so a sequel isn't needed to complete the story.

Would you prefer a dev to release a new game under the same IP as a sequel with the same characters and setting?

Or a new IP with new characters and a new setting but basically the same gameplay?

I can enjoy either, depending on how well it's done.

I prefer spiritual successors.

Sequels have the potential to retroactively ruin a series. Especially if the director doesn't understand why the original was good/popular. And it's harder to skip bad instalments if they are directly related.

If the original already told a good standalone story, I'd prefer a spiritual successor. Even if I really loved the characters and world of the original story, I'd rather something new than an unnecessary extension.

I would say I'd prefer sequels, but some of my favourite games have been spiritual successors, so...
