Well, yes. It obviously all depends on what the job is for.

I work in at a relatively small, family run business. But it's a multi million dollar business.

I honestly think me and maybe 3 other people know more than the absolute basic workings of MS Office, including the two 50+ year olds that own the company. Mainly because the entire business is run on a program that was custom built for the business. There's days I literally have to show people how to sort columns in Excel.

Anyone at any age can come in and learn the system, it would just take time to train them.

And the job I had before that was exactly the same. Run on a program that was custom built for them. So unless you want a careen in IT, most jobs won't require a vast knowledge of programs like MS Office.

Fair point. I was focusing on jobs that did require the knowledge

Well of course.

But those job requirements will slowly move towards being based on the candidates knowledge, and not the other way around.

Like, knowing the inner workings of a Fax machine is no longer the main requirement of being an admin assistant, because it's a dead technology.

Most people, regardless of age, know the basic functions of a PC, and that's all you really need to know to get more office environment jobs.

That's a big thing as well.

We're probably 15 years away from not having to know how to create ANYTING on MS Word or Excel, as Google Sheets will eventually replace it all.
Only if Google vastly improves it. I love Googles suite. Im a teacher, and it had been great for educational purposes. But Sheets still cant hold a candle to Excel. People who need massive number-crunching power or simply have a lot of data still are going to use Excel (or something else), not Google Sheets.

I've noticed young people are really bad at troubleshooting. Like everyone 25-40 probably knows what three buttons to press when a program freezes for too long etc, but younger than that they've grown up with streamlined apps and operating systems that actually work most of the time, so they don't know where to start if something goes wrong. IT departments must get some hilarious boomer-esque questions from them.

Idk. A regular keyboard is superior to touch screen for being able to quickly type out emails.

And fax machines for whatever fucking reason are still used. I don't get that with emails
