On phones.

He means an actual desktop computer.

A fair few Zoomers really do have little to no exposure to a PC.

The relevance of said theory relies on technology not changing in the next decade.

I think he's implying that because zoomers all use consumer-grade electronics such as Apple products, they don't get experience with the more complex stuff.

Which is boomer bs tbh. How could the most technologically advanced generation in history have more trouble with computers than a generation that never grew up with them?

some companies get really dumb with their job descriptions. maybe their "social media" person is basically from marketing & in charge of their website. and i would expect someone in charge of the website to know html and css at least

its a stretch though

But I have noticed class mates not knowing what to do with pages files when professors want word docs, how to do file conversions or all kinds of other things that are even remotely technical. Im not even talking about things close to actual coding.

I hate apple stuff. I dont know why anyone sends out pages or their version of adobe that says the file type is .pdf, and ends in .pdf, but wont open in anything other than an apple version of adobe. And when I open the file in notepad, instead of saying PDF 1.whatever, it says rtfd. Did they just rename the file to .pdf and expect it to work or what?

As an IT admin it's astonishing how bad people are with their emails. Keeping stuff they want to keep in the deleted bin, not understanding phishing emails, not understanding rules they themselves have set up. Not archiving. Then it gets more gross when people who are heavy attachments senders with other employees- constantly sending attachments back and forth to each other when they may have sent the file 3 times (they can't find, or won't find, the email) Or maybe the attachment was a different revision 4 months ago, but they're looking in their sent folder to forward what they send 5 revisions ago instead of sending the current version from their computer (same name except it's called Bid.xlsx (4)) You teach them stuff like sharing over Onedrive or Dropbox, it's like voodoo to them

Usually they'll just blame that their email is haunted, but if you sit down long enough with them and follow their trail of nonsense, you can make them feel like idiots.

Those dopey Office classes they teach to people in associates college programs don't touch Outlook, they're teaching people how to insert pictures into Word documents and turn cells different colors in Excel. They aren't any good at those things, either

As far as the OP states with his subject, all my ex's had like 7,000 unread unorganized emails. Being able to organize your primary email address is a key

Most 30 and 40 year olds cant either. Difference is, theres actual coding classes kids can take as young as 8 years old. They didnt have anything like that when I was in school. My son is in 8th grade and is in two separate computer classes.

70% of the country use their PC as an internet machine. The other 30% learn on a need to know basis.

Always found it weird my grandad was more technologically literate than most millenials. He stayed on top of the evolution of technology. He also had a computer that didn't come with a operating system like windows just MS DOS so he designed his own OS. Nothing fancy but it worked. If you never seen DOS it was basically having to enter codes for everything it was like a first language to that man. Never went to college either he self taught

Then you got me. I know how to use the shit but fuck if I know how it works.

No, they are not "computer illiterate" they are just not well versed in one particular program. Kids that grew up in a "Mac World" shouldn't be faulted for not knowing how to use PC programs.

Those arent Sheets skills though. A better example would be They probably dont know how to use formulas, make charts, or create pivot tables. And they certainly dont write macros because Google Sheets doesnt support them; it uses Scripts (I thinkIm. It really a spreadsheet expert).

ETA: And Google Docs doesnt even have a Section Break option IIRC. At least it doesnt work the way MS Word does.

That's a big thing as well.

We're probably 15 years away from not having to know how to create ANYTING on MS Word or Excel, as Google Sheets will eventually replace it all.

Well, yes. It obviously all depends on what the job is for.

I work in at a relatively small, family run business. But it's a multi million dollar business.

I honestly think me and maybe 3 other people know more than the absolute basic workings of MS Office, including the two 50+ year olds that own the company. Mainly because the entire business is run on a program that was custom built for the business. There's days I literally have to show people how to sort columns in Excel.

Anyone at any age can come in and learn the system, it would just take time to train them.

And the job I had before that was exactly the same. Run on a program that was custom built for them. So unless you want a careen in IT, most jobs won't require a vast knowledge of programs like MS Office.
