Yes, traditionally, it can be said that hummus is made from chickpeas and refried beans are made from pinto beans, but in modern times, many are using black beans or other beans for both.

All dried beans need to be boil, or cold soaked for a long period, before they can be eaten. Not surprised you didn't know.

Also refried is a misnomer, since while they are heated and mashed in hot oil, they aren't actual fried once or even refried for that matter.

Hummus and refried beans are just hot and cold versions of mashed or blended beans mixed with oil and seasonings.

You did suggest that chickpeas are the only boiled bean. Pinto beans are never fried dry, shit, they are never even fried. A dried bean, fried would become less edible.

I guess I should have written as,

"Aren't DRIED chickpeas ONLY typically boiled as opposed to ALSO fried with fat before being blended in hummus."

You are the only one talking about putting dry beans in hot oil.

You could also be searing, browning, or sauteing. Cooking with oil is very common and not all of it is frying even if a frying pan could be used.

I've been making hot mashed beans for 35 years. There is nothing fried or refried about them.

After goggling some recipes, mashing or blending regional beans with seasonings, hot ir cold is very common, very similar to regional dumpling-like dishes.

Hummus recipes seem to require more oil than refried bean recipes.
