People usually don't forget "everything" that would be an extremely severe case.

It's usually just large chunks of life. You might forget the girlfriend you started dating 6 months ago entirely for example.

It absolutely is a thing. Imagine being like 10 and visiting your family on the eastern side of the state, only for you to stay the night and them not recognizing you literally the next morning.

To answer the OP seriously: no.

obviously people forget or repress traumatic events
obviously physical damage to your brain can destroy the memory structure
obviously Alzheimer's and dementia exist

but even a concussion or shipwreck is not going to make you forget who you are, in the common way that it's depicted in media. You can't just forget who you are and then remember later when your memories return or something.

a traumatic event wont cause it, think of the kinds of horrible shit humans experience without getting amnesia (battlefields, serial killers, prison, etc.) Not one gets fucking amnesia.

Forgetting a horrible event or car accident is "amnesia" but it's not "amnesia" as it's depicted on TV and books, comics, games, FF7, etc.
