Winston-Salem Fire Chief Trey Mayo said that the amount of ammonium nitrate fueling a fire at Winston Weaver Co. 600 tons is more than double that present at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, that exploded on 2013, killing 15 people.

Yep. I live in Winston-Salem. 1.5 miles from that building.

I haven't been evacuated yet but if the building explodes, I'm going to have to get out of the city and go stay with a co-worker in nearby Kernersville (the school I teach at is also there).

Yeah, it's rough over here. I live half a mile outside the evac zone. The ash and fumes from the burning are everywhere.

This will destroy thousands of lives if the plant explodes...and it looks like it will, tbh. Firefighters can't get close.

Aside from Texas there was that one in China that blew to smithereens.

The explosion in Beirut a couple years ago was also caused by ammonium nitrate. Shit, there's a whole list of them on Wikipedia. It's dangerous stuff.

Thanks. The biggest concern is if the plant blows in the middle of the night. I'm a high school teacher in the next town over, so I have a place to evacuate. But if the plant blows, 6000 people are going to lose their homes.

I have $10,000 worth of renter's insurance so I'm good if my apartment complex burns down, but this could be devastating and it'll spread quick.
