It occurs to me that I have never had to do it before. I know they have it built into the system, but am asking here to limit the amount of searching into the subject I have to do.

I am trading one of my old laptops to someone for their XBOX Series S. Don't want my data to become compromised so trying to wipe it all off if possible.

Boot from recovery menu (Google how to do this), find the "Reset my PC" option - there's a version that nukes all your files too.

This option should not be relied on if you have any super-sensitive stuff / believe you're specifically being targetted / etc. You're gonna want to look at to how to "shred" the data on there, then reinstall the OS from a USB drive, in that case. For an average user who just doesn't want the next person knowing what kind of porn they're into, where that next person is unlikely to care more than a quick attempt to open browser history, the Reset option will be plenty.

Yeah there isn't really anything on it. Bought it a couple years ago and basically never used it. Just being sure I don't have active sign ins or whatever plus I doubt someone wants an already used operating system.

EDIT: I should note I'm assuming you have Windows 10 here, though I believe this is also applicable to Windows 8 and it's likely also true for Windows 11. Windows 7 is another matter, you'll need to reinstall the OS from a USB drive (or DVD) there.

boot into a different OS or even a windows installation USB and wipe the disk that way. that way it wipes the OS off the disk as well, not just some files etc
