Bruce Wayne looks emo, the film appears to have a very grimdark aesthetic, and on the whole it looks like an R-rated drama that's ever so slightly trimmed down to reach a PG-13.

I think the grimdark fad is as dead as the zombie movie fad. I think superheroes who take themselves too seriously are missing the point of superheroes. And I don't think Batman should ever be written in a manner to fully exclude his originally intended target audience: children.

My fondest Batman memories are watching The Animated Series as a child. A generation or two before me, it would have been the SuperFriends or the Adam West series. A little after my time, there was that weird cartoon where Joker had dreadlocks and a monkey-like fighting stance. And there's that weird WWE crossover with John Cena. I haven't seen it, but I am curious who has the stronger plot armor between Bats and Cena.

This film looks like it desperately wishes it came out during a time when a good movie was No Country for Old Men, the best show on TV was The Walking Dead, and The Wire was the show that you talked to your friends about around the office water cooler. It's not far enough in the past to be able to bring it back and make it new again. It just feels like it's chasing yesterday's trends.

Hmm. Interesting read. I can totally see your point.

I would be down for a Batman movie that's on the lighter side, as long as it's nothing like Batman & Robin. But I still love me some dark and realistic Batman.

I loved the Nolan films for this, but having recently rewatched them, I realized they are no where near as good as I remember them. So I'm hoping this one is better. Plus, I'm extremely excited it's Matt Reeves directing this. I absolutely LOVED his Planet of the Apes films.

Batman did originally intend to be for kids. But even in his first years in the 30s, he was pretty dark compared to what would be allowed for kids in modern day. His more kiddy era came in the 50s and 60s and was only because of the Comic Code forcing them to lighten up. It was never the original vision for the character

Also, he's not really for kids anymore. Apart from the occasional cartoon, Batman has mostly been written for adults since the 80s

Barely any kids even read mainstream DC or Marvel anymore . I know most people on this board don't read comics so I'm not surprised you wouldn't know this but apart from non-canon material designed for younger readers, both Marvel and DC write their main material in the comics for an adult audience. As that is who now buys their comics

Batman should be dark. I'm not calling for a new Batman movie where he's wearing the blue costume. I just think he should be more adventurous and fun.

This looks kinda... it looks like it would make a good courtroom drama and that's not what I think of when it comes to superheroes.

I will say one positive though: Warner Bros. seems to be letting the filmmakers pursue their own artistic vision instead of telling them how Batman should be. It might not be my preferred Batman, but I like that the direction of the character seems to be in the hands of creative artists and not the suits.

You can say that if it becomes the highest grossing Batman movie. Otherwise, it's subjective.

I mean, it'd still be subjective even them I'm just being a little shit, but this is absolutely the direction it shoukd take, it's in line with the absolute best Batman comics where he's focusing on detective work. Makes me think of something like The Long Halloween

Yeah, exactly. Batman is at his best when he's more grounded and doing detective work especially a younger, angrier Batman.

I dont think there's any particular best for, just a few great directions. We also haven't gotten any recent Batman villains get their showtime in movies. Maybe Batman Who Laughs?

I think there's a best or at least preferred direction depending upon where Batman is during his career. As for recent Batman villains getting spotlight in movies, it would be nice but someone like Professor Pyg needs to be in a R-rated movie. Many of his classic villains still need a good showing like Clayface, Poison Ivy, Freeze, Ventriloquist, and so on.

Honestly, villains like Ventriloquist and Firefly can have smaller roles.

No. I'm just offering it as a definable standard of measurement.

The "best" Batman movie can be debated until the end of time. The highest grossing Batman is objective. I personally like Tim Burton's Batman better than Christopher Nolan's even though I recognize the higher production value in the latter.

iirc, Matt Reeves wanted to give a different take on Bruce Wayne, where instead of playing up the billionaire playboy, he's more of a recluse, like Kurt Cobain.

IDK how well you can make Freeze work, he's barely a villain under his best versions. But I'd like any of those. Glad we're also getting a more comic accurate Penguin.

A lot of people really like The Court of Owls. There's also villains Dollmaker, Dr. Phosphorus, and Joker's newest girlfriend, Punchline.

The best story for Freeze would probably be a live action adaptation of BTAS Heart of Ice episode in my opinion. It might be really refreshing for the audience to witness a more sympathetic Batman villain on the big screen without the ice puns.

Yeah, I'm really excited to see this version of Penguin. He looks great in all of the trailers so far.
