https://edition.cnn.com/2022/01/24/politics/newt-gingrich-jail-time/index.html

As the House's January 6 committee continues its work to get to the bottom of what happened before, during and after the riot at the US Capitol, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has a warning for them: If Republicans take over the House, you could well be arrested.

Yes, really.

"I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down," Gingrich told Fox's Maria Bartiromo. "And the wolves are going to find out that they're now sheep and they're the ones who are in fact, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kinds of laws they're breaking."

Which raises a simple question: What laws does Gingrich believe the members of the committee -- which includes two Republican House members -- are violating exactly?

...

The closest Gingrich got to actually explaining himself was when he told Bartiromo that the members of the House committee were "literally just running over the law, pursuing innocent people," adding that "it's basically a lynch mob."

I went searching for what the heck Gingrich was actually talking about and came across an op-ed he wrote last Thursday entitled "The Wolves Will Become Sheep." The piece reads like a longer version of his riff with Bartiromo. In one section, Gingrich writes:

"The January 6 Select Committee is in the process of potentially bankrupting scores of Americans who worked for or supported President Trump. They face financial ruin defending themselves against the committee's attack. The legal costs of fighting subpoenas and the further cost of legal counsel if put under oath by a hostile congressional committee creates a real burden. That financial burden is compounded by the psychological stress of being under assault by the House Democrats -- and potentially also the FBI."

His solution? A new Republican majority should form a "Select Committee on Congressional Dishonesty and Abuse of Power" to examine the work of the January 6 committee.

Again, though, what is the crime that these House members have committed that will mean the "real risk of jail"? Is it, as Gingrich writes, abuse of power?

I did a quick search for "is abuse of power a crime" and pulled up this language from the Department of Justice: "A simple definition of the abuse of power is the misuse of a position of power to take unjust advantage of individuals, organizations, or governments. Abuses of power have been variously described as white-collar crime, economic crime, organizational crime, occupational crime, public corruption, organized crime, and governmental and corporate deviance."

So, it appears as though Gingrich is alleging that the committee is taking "unjust advantage of individuals" in their probe. But, how? By subpoenaing individuals close to Donald Trump to find out what they said, what he said and when? By asking them to come testify under oath and, in a few rare instances where they refuse, by filing contempt of Congress charges?

That feels like very thin gruel. Gingrich, no dummy, knows that. He's just throwing red meat to the Trump base -- consequences be damned.

But suggesting that members of Congress will be jailed for doing their job is a little much even for someone like Gingrich, who has made his name in recent years for making outlandish and unverifiable claims about opposition to Trump.

inb4 "bluh CNN bad source leftist shill" - I cut all the unnecessary snark from the article, and it doesn't change the fact that this happened.

People tend to get upset over the perceived overuse of the term "fascism" nowadays, but throwing your political enemies in jail on trumped up charges is a hallmark of fascism and here you have a Republican suggesting that in the event of a Republican win, that's exactly what they'll be doing.

With Hillary and "Lock Her Up", there were shades of this - but all they had to go on were slander and exaggeration. Hillary's emails and shit were not a jailable offence, and Donald Trump couldn't follow through on his campaign bluster to have her arrested.

This bluster is much more close to home - after all, in the wake of Trump's election loss, he empowered his supporters to attack a building where Congress was sitting for the inauguration of a new President. It was an insurrection - it was an attempted coup. People erected a mock gallows. People brought flex cuffs and guns. And now you have scum-sucking sleazeballs like Newt Gingrich saying "the government is abusing their power in prosecuting anyone attached to January 6, and if we're re-elected we're going to put them in jail".

The Republican party has been radicalized by the Tea Party's abject insanity, and they've been emboldened by Donald Trump's popularity and the toxic support of internet trolls and white supremacists. And you may roll you eyes and go "look at the leftist calling everyone a Nazi", but what you're seeing in behavior like this is the roots of fascism taking hold in one of your two main political parties.

And you can see it in other politicians. Before Marjorie Greene-Taylor was elected, she was a qanon nutjob who recorded herself yelling threats at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez through her mail slot. Ted Cruz is a populist fuckface who slides further to the right in response to his allies insulting him and his wife to his face. The fact that a millionaire Mormon is more of a moderate than most of the Republican party right now is fucking insane.

I wanted to talk about this because dipshits have been downplaying this horseshit for years now. "It's not that bad, you're blowing everything out of proportion, stop making a big deal over nothing". Republicans are floating the idea of jailing members of Congress for prosecuting extremists who attacked a sitting Congress. Between the people who were gathered to inaugurate a new President and the people who erected gallows and brought guns to attack and potentially kill politicians they didn't like - with people trying to POINT OUT WHERE THE RIOTERS' BIGGEST TARGETS WERE - the right has sided with the gun-toting attempted murderers. And for the crime of daring to prosecute them for attacking a sitting Congress - Republicans and Democrats, who were certifying an election - Republicans want to send congressional members to jail.

It's been said a hundred times, but it bears repeating.

This is what fascism looks like.

In terms of the USs modern day March into fascism, Gingrich is basically Goebbels to Reagans Hitler, so. Anything out of his mouth is pretty much guaranteed garbage.
