Been watching a bunch of student films and some studio films for school and sound will make or break an otherwise great story/concept/visual spectacle/whatever.

I've been a part of a few student productions that have sound as an after thought, mostly due to production costs or accessibility to equipment, but it completely ruins the film. Either they record directly into the camera, or they don't record properly on set and think they can fix it "in post".

The average moviegoer probably didn't have to experience extremely bad sound until like Tenet, but it's pretty rampant in the indie/film school film community. A good sound guy could really make your "meh" film stand out from the rest. Sound gets overlooked by so many people cuz it's usually perfect, or close to it, in major productions until it's not and you're like oh fuck this actually sucks.

I mean, the actual visuals are the most important by a wide margin. You can make movies with zero sound. No video and it's just the radio.

Like finding the right delivery, it's all about finding the right take. Roll it, roll it again. Hey guys, remember that stuff from 3 weeks ago? We gonna roll that again.

I mean, obviously I'm talking about films with sound because this is the 21st century lol but bad sound can completely ruin great visuals, while "bad visuals" can often times be subjective. Especially in the modern, everything is intentionally underexposed, trend of film. Sound really doesnt have that leeway. You can't intentionally peak and say it was an artistic decision.

Without the picture it's not film anymore. It's just music and or spoken word

I feel like I'm being pretty clear in what I mean lol basically, bad sound can ruin great visuals/story, while great sound can enhance a bad visual/story. You can make the most beautiful film in the world but if it is in the red for 25% of it (or more) or there is a abundance of noise, or inaudible, then it's just an overall bad experience and a waste.

Obviously film is a visual medium. But most moviegoers will recognize bad sound way before they realize that a shot was lit incorrectly or overexposed.
