I think you had to be along for the ride to watch it evolve step by step. To a new player or somebody who lost track over the years, it's absolute madness, but for people who have seen the meta shift slowly over time, it's probably not that strange to them.

Yu-gi-oh never had a mana or resource system so inevitably it's gotten to the point where you can summon several monsters a turn.

Yeah TC the power creep is unreal. If you aren't vomiting your hand, deck, and etc. decks on to the battlefield on your first or second turn to establish dominance or going for a OTK you're losing hard. I remember being hardcore into the YGO TCG for the first few years when it came out and while it was incredibly simple and far from well balanced, comparing that to how it's played now it's almost unrecognizable.

How time you invest in learning the meta, the best meta decks and predicting plays + much money you put into buying cards to make a deck that is great in the current meta + how well you know degenerate slight of hand techniques to secretly stack your deck in your favor + some luck = "Heart of the Cards" in real life. Almost all successful pro TCG players have done these things.

Yea I used to play MTG but quit.

Im familiar with it but I got back into playing in 2017 after a 13 year long break it's not so bad.

Someone went through a five minute turn that resulted in one monster with 3000 ATK that could negate spells/traps once per turn, and another monster that negates monster effects three times.

Managed to play around that through some bait activations and abusing chain links so they couldn't negate the effects I needed, and clear their board, all this work resulting in me having my own negate monster on board.

Then they just played one spell card that negated my monster and OTKd me lol. Had to put the game down for the day after that

The game wasn't going to stay stagnant for the 10+ years you haven't touched it. If you want those old formats, there are plenty of Yugioh video games, and one will almost certainly be what you want.
