If so, good on you. I feel like you would be in the minority though.. My wife isn't big into expensive jewelry and $3500 was right about as much as I was willing to pay (but she had never set any kind of expectation on type of ring, price of ring, etc, so the ring was completely my choice at that price point)

Wed budgeted for it for a fair few months.
My wife was happier going cheaper, I was happier going more expensive. We compromised when she found one she really liked.

My wife would have been pissed had I spent a lot on her engagement ring. Of course, "a lot" is subjective. I wasn't making a whole lot at the time, and I spent I think around $2100, and she loves it. She likes it more than I do actually. I've offered many times to buy a new one but she's happy with it.

We're also relatively practical people and tend to find a balance with spending vs the experience. We saw absolutely no reason to have a huge wedding, for example, and limited it to 70 people. To each their own, but some people's views towards the whole experience from engagement to honeymoon blows my mind.

I entered this topic thinking it'd be a normal-sized ring that's for some reason considered "not good enough". This shit looks worse than a plastic ring from a cracker jack box. Never thought I'd see a ring made by meticulously stringing molecules together in a circle. Honestly, you'd be better off with no ring that this shit.

I'm honestly not sure I'd ever feel comfortable if someone proposed to me with a ring that cost several thousand quid.

Like legit would never want to wear it out and would have to keep it somewhere safe and secure. Never mind that's several grand that could go to something useful and productive.

Do you have to buy two rings or is the engagement ring dual purpose? I could see dropping a pretty good amount on one ring, but if I have to get two then one is going to be cheap as hell.

Same. Expected a normal ring, but the ring in the op looks extremely fragile. Like one day the band will just snap and fall off her finger.

My wife basically picked out the ring she wanted - cushion cut diamond solitaire on a yellow gold setting (prongs are platinum I believe). Basically everything about it was custom (as are our wedding bands). Total cost of her engagement ring was $13,100.

I just figured it'd be much easier for her to just pick out what she wanted instead of ultimately just guessing. Worked out well and she loves it.

Engagement ring is the one you get for the proposal, but then you ultimately need to buy 2 additional rings - the wedding bands for him and her that you will don at the wedding.

Typically, the groom buys the band for his bride and she gets the band for her man.

I spent too much on an engagement ring once upon a time. The matching wedding band never got used.

Lesson learned though.

The one I got for wifey was around 800. It was small, but we were both college students at the time and she loves it to this day because it reminds her of that time in our lives. I eventually got her another band with a bunch of diamonds in it, and they look great next to each other on her finger.

Women who are being materialistic and demanding expensive bullshit tend to make horrible wives. Divorce rate is 53% now in the US, there is a reason for that and this shit about engagement rings is playing a part in that.

An engagement ring that is not even going to be worn much should be cheap. If you want to spend big do it on honey moon destinations, travel accommodations, and something you get value out of.

Never understood the insanely expensive ring thing, that's why I date a girl that isn't so materialistic about those kinda things. The one I got my fiancee was $700, when I hinted that the day was coming soon she sent me like 8 different rings to choose from that she liked. You obviously want to get her something nice that she wants to wear, but when you start getting into 2 months salary territory, wouldn't you rather just take 2 months off of work altogether and spend more time with each other?
