You're definitely pigeonholed into playing the game at the pace they want you to play. And that pace is obviously rather fast. So it's not for everyone. I loved it though. On Ultra-Violence I found it to be fairly challenging, and that's the middle difficulty.

Unlike the last Doom, Eternal is much more about resource management. Try to get into the habit of consistently using your secondaries because the difficulty curve expects that you're constantly switching between chainsawing enemies for ammo, pulling glory kills for health, and setting enemies on fire for armor. Using "the right gun for the right enemy" is de-emphasized compared to the last one in exchange for being able to use the best weapons more often if you're smart with your secondary abilities.

There's lots of platforming too, which some people didn't like. But I loved it, gives a nice breather in between intense action

It's much more challenging, but if you enjoyed 2016 Doom you will probably enjoy this one as well. I hope you have a good time with it!

doom eternal is maybe one of the most admirable games that have been released in like a decade IMO. Doom 2016 was a weird game that had no idea what it really wanted to be and the result was an FPS that feels very little like classic doom and more like someone slapped a bunch of pointless upgrade systems on top of painkiller or serious Sam. Its ok but very middling as far as FPS games go

doom eternal takes that weird half of a game and turns it into something that feels even less like doom but is crazier, more fast paced and way more unique. The upgrade systems and weapon alt fires all feel dramatically more significant, weapons feel powerful and satisfying, enemies have much more u owie interplay with each other, and the new gameplay loop keeps your brain far more active than any FPS Ive played since the early 2000s. The lore? Its dumb and cringy. Music? I can mostly take or leave it. But they gameplay? Its got a rhythm to it that no other fps really has

its such an uncompromising, experimental game and it took so many chances. People bounce off of the gameplay changes sometimes and I mean honestly thats fine and even to be expected. but I really enjoy them and admire a game as high profile as DE taking something as (in my opinion) middling and hamstrung by expectations as D2016 and going this time were going to try something all our own. Its an approach missing from modern triple a development

What are secondaries ? Is that referring to the chainsaw et al? So far Ive gotten the chainsaw so Ive been trying to use that, and trying to use a small amount of bullets to stagger where possible

Chainsaw, flamethrower, and Glory kills.

You eventually unlock an ice grenade upgrade for your regular grenade as well but I don't like that one very much.

It was also not the best choice of words since every gun also has at least one secondary fire mode and you should absolutely use those as well because they can be incredibly useful in a pinch. For example, if you find yourself stuck with the regular shotgun against a larger enemy, full auto mode will melt them pretty quickly.

holy shit I did not realize until playing this game that the PS5 adjusts the R2 and L2 triggers depending on the gameplay
