So let's say one night you get really drunk, and you say some things which aren't the nicest. The next day your friends ask you "why would you say those things". You then say "I was drunk and wasn't thinking clearly". They then say "I don't wanna hear your excuses". You then say "It's not an excuse, it's an explanation. You asked me why I said it, and I gave you a reason"

It seems many people try to villainize explanations as lame excuses.

Explanations can still be excuses.

"I was drunk and wasn't thinking clearly" is an explanation for "Why were you acting like a jackass last night?" but it's not a sufficient explanation for why you said "I've always regretted marrying you" when drunk.

so umm don't get drunk and say asshole things?

Alcohol makes people say the things their inhibitions prevented them from.

I get your point, TC, and I agree with you. There are times explanations are totally sufficient and reasonable, but people write them off as an excuse.

Alcohol is a tricky one and maybe not best example which is why I think you're getting kickback, but I still agree with your overall point

Well this is merely hypothetical scenario, but I think yes, many times people say things when drunk they wouldn't say if sober.

Alcohol doesnt make you an asshole, it can bring it out. Saying you were drunk is an excuse, and a bad one at that.

No one said alcohol makes you an asshole. Someone asked you why you said something, and alcohol played a role because it makes you not think clearly about what you say.
