Music isn't really about the most popular anymore. Cuz of the internet, you can just about find anybody doing your favorite genre somewhere out there, and they're earning some pennies to justify keep doing it.

Rock is still a base point for a lot of music, so hard to say if it's dead even in terms of popularity. But specific genres of Rock aren't nearly as prevalent for sure.

Yes. Its been pretty much completely absent from the billboard top 100 charts for 8 or 9 years now. Indie and alt groups will always be around and metal is popular but rock hasnt been mainstream in forever

There are modern disco bands too but disco is definitely dead as a popular genre.

Rocks peak in popularity was much longer than discos though (and may or may not still be going on)

What does that even mean?

If you want to make money being popular does matter.

Well, disco's peak popularity was rather short, less than five years.
Rock's peak, however, begun in the mid 1960s and kept going for about forty years at the least.
Still, that something isn't popular does not mean it's dead. I think a genre is dead when it's not seen any new releases in many years. Vaudeville blues might be one such genre. It was last popular in the 1920s, but unlike the similarly then-popular dixieland jazz, it has not had revivals or dedicated enthusiasts worldwide performing and recording new material.
