without a case

it was broken. I ended up getting him a new copy for his birthday. I didn't play Tales of Symphonia for another 15 years or so

inspired by the poll of the day

I remember going to friends' places and seeing discs just "laying around" outside their cases and having to stop myself from scolding them

then when I started working at the game store I was exposed to the truly depraved way people treat their games, with people trying to resell discs that have been scratched to hell and water-stained

this is coming from someone who got mad when nintendo stopped including snes cartridge covers

The only disc I've ever broken was my PC copy of Sim City 3000 as I was trying to pop it from its case for the first time. I tried to be as gentle as I possibly could but I swear that thing was one step above fused into that center plastic. The plastic didn't flex and the disc didn't rotate at all in the case if you tried to spin it.

I remember being afraid to break discs that were too tightly packaged
