A GAY couple were banned from buying their dream home because "homosexuality is against God's word".

Luke Whitehouse and Lachlan Mantell were denied the chance to view the 650,000 property and were even sent Bible passages from the devoutly Christian current owners.

Lachlan was told the 650,000 property could not be sold to 'two men in a partnership'

They spotted the three-bed house in Coulsdon, Surrey on website Purplebricks last week and immediately fell in love with it so requested an in-person look.

But builder Luke Main, 33, and his wife, Cambridge University medical physicist Dr Joanna Brunker, 34, refused to let Luke and Lachlan even visit the semi-detached cottage - let alone buy it.

They were told that it could simply not be sold to "two men in a partnership" before being hit with Bible passages describing their relationship as "a sin".

Luke, 34, told MailOnline: "Initially, for the first 10 seconds, I laughed. I thought it was a joke.

"But then I was upset and angry and I had a cry on the phone to my mum.

"Homophobia still exists, it is still out there. I did not see it coming. I was blindsided by it."

The Mains had requested some more information about the prospective buyers' "position and circumstances".

Lachlan happily responded telling them: "I'm a 37-year-old TV producer for ITV and Luke is a 33-year-old business owner in education," before adding that they liked the area and were in search of their first home.But they were left stunned when the religious couple replied saying: "We're sorry if we seem intrusive, but we just want to make clear that we would be unwilling for two men in a partnership to view or buy our house.

"As it is contrary to the gracious teaching in God's Word, the Holy Bible, e.g. Romans 1:24-28 and Jude 7 (King James Version)."

The first passage cited describes homosexuality as a "sinful desire" and a "shameful act" while the second that those engaged in such acts should be "suffering the vengeance of eternal fire".

Luke, from the Midlands, and Lachlan, from Adelaide, Australia, reported the couple, who were advertising the house on Rightmove.

Estate agent Purplebricks has since removed the listing as the Main's message is "completely opposed" to the firm's "views and values".

Luke, who lives in Putney, south west London, and has been with Lachlan for eight years, said: "Since I came out eight years ago I have not come across discrimination.

"I probably have been discriminated against but was just not aware of it."

A Purplebricks spokesperson said: "The sentiments expressed in this message are completely opposed to Purplebricks' views and values.

"We have contacted the seller to return their fee and request that they sell their property with a different agent."

SHOCK RESPONSE

LGBT charity Stonewall said it was "shocked" to hear that a gay couple had been turned away from buying a house because of their sexuality.

Asha Misra, associate director of communications and campaigns, added: "This simply has no place in Britain today."

Dr Brunker and her husband have previously expressed their views on same-sex relationships in a letter to a House of Lords committee in 2019

Not really considering this is a private sale. You can discriminate on your own private property in whatever stupid ways you want. Trying to regulate that is impossible. On the inverse, publicly shaming them for being assholes is also perfectly fine, so hopefully they wont get a sale at all.

We can regulate the sale of houses. For example, you can't just not sell a black family a house. In the US "you can't refuse to sell a home to someone simply because they have kids or are of a different race from you." (findlaw.com via google).

But like I said, they don't represent religion as a whole. I'm Christian and accept gays. The church I went to as a kid was very accepting. The pastor was one of my best friend's dad and he was incredibly nice

I know that there are those nutjob pastors who stand in front of their church holding signs saying God hates f***. But please understand that not all of them are like that.

People gravitate toward whatever justifications best suit their intended goals. You want to be greedy and apathetic? Try social Darwinism. You want to hate foreigners? Call it a form of patriotism. Want to be racist? Give an elementary explanation of how genetics work and pretend that your entire ethnic group is more advanced than another entire ethnic group.

It's easy to pretend that religion is the wellspring from which all ignorance and hatred flows, but there really is no one "devil" that you could remove from society and remove all evils. If everyone woke up an atheist tomorrow, the people who claim that God made them better would find other excuses to pretend they're humanity's upper class.

They do tell everyone to stop the hate. The problem is that assholes will still associate themselves with Christianity regardless. Like how the Pope and many Catholic leaders urged people to get vaccinated, but still tons of Catholics are still anti-vaxxers.

The problem is the Church itself. it says to love everyone, then turns around and proclaims anyone that doesnt submit to its views or is different (other religions, gays, etc) is going to hell (which is against what the Bible says, that judgement is left for their god alone)

A lot of Christians are opposed to hatred. I'm assuming these "leaders" you speak of are conservative Christian leaders and, well, when you tie politics to religion, religion is the one that takes a backseat. You can't serve God and the GOP with equal fervor -- and the latter pays better here on Earth.

There are plenty of pro-LGBTQ churches and LGBTQ pastors.
