I actually read some reddit posts talking about it a little while ago. The reasons I remember:

  • Putin wants more distance between Munich and the western powers
  • Ukraine has a lot of farmland and Russia could use the food production
  • Russia annexed Crimea a while back, being one of the few warm-water ports Russia has. Control of Ukraine would give them easier access to it.
  • Putin is a dictator, but he still needs to maintain some level of popularity. Winning a war and gaining land makes you popular.
  • Ukraine used to belong to Russia and some people think it still should.
