Whenever I think about my favorite movies, I rarely think of it. But whenever I stumble upon it in some fashion, I cant turn away. The characters all work great together, the setting is calmly eerie, and they did the unseen monster thing a few years before Halloween put it to such great use. I love how the crew also slowly comes to a greater realization of how they are in over their heads, and Quints decent into a determined madness to catch the shark puts them in harms way before even he finally yields to their reality.

Absolutely great film.

In my top 5 for sure.

Is it though? Giant shark decides to swim around in swallow water.

I still get goosebumps every time I watch it.

I was surprised by how much I liked it. I still expected to like it as a thriller, but the characters and their relationships were just so good.

I think it might be Spielbergs finest, just the slow burn with some little spikes until that last 15 minutes or so just releases and makes it all worth it.

Funny to think that Robert Shaw (the actor who played Quint) originally thought it would be best to get really drunk for that moment, to play it in the proper element, and it was a disaster. The next day, he apparently nailed it one shot.

Robert Shaw loved a drink and decided he'd try and do the scene when he was drunk.

"It was a disaster," Dreyfuss recalled.

"That day at four in the morning, Robert called Steven (Spielberg) and he said, 'How badly did I humiliate myself?' And Steven said, 'Not fatally.' And the next day he did the scene in one take."
