I just had one of those moments where a confusing childhood situation suddenly makes sense with adult perspective.

My dad got laser eye surgery many years ago but shortly after started wearing non-prescription glasses again even though he hated wearing glasses. He said it was for "fashion purposes" but he has never been a hip or trendy guy in the slightest. They got into more fights than ever after that surgery and things settled down once he started wearing them.

This might sound crazy but I think she might have had some kind of eyeglasses kink and perhaps the surgery disrupted their sex life, resulting in general marital discord. Can eyeglasses really be that much of a turn-on for someone?

I'm almost tempted to ask her what that was all about because it makes a lot of sense but also seems too ridiculous. I really want to know though. That's the only time I've ever been worried about them possibly getting a divorce lmao.

Your hunch is exactly right. My girlfriend wasn't fighting with me when I got my hair buzzed, but she was notably more fickle until she could, like, fluff it up again.

I was very wrong.

The fighting was because of financial issues around her going back to school and him lying to her about a loan he got to pay for the surgery since insurance wouldn't cover it.

He really did start wearing the glasses again for superficial reasons, specifically that he felt people at the office didn't recognize him the same and he was being overlooked/ignored because of it. I'm hesitant to accept that but I've seen some really stupid workplace interactions so maybe it's true.

They stopped fighting because my brother got into some serious trouble and they needed a united front to get him through that.

All signs point to my eyeglasses fetish theory being false, so I'm really glad I didn't lead with that.

However, now I'm wondering about my brother's past. I remember the fallout of him getting in trouble but I never knew that he was actually in trouble, let alone what it was for. I know he had to switch schools but I never knew if that was voluntary or he was expelled. My parents didn't tell me what was going on at the time and just said he needed to go to a school that was a better fit for him. They will not tell me about it now, saying it was up to him if he wanted to share that. It's been over 20 years and he hasn't, so I'm thinking he doesn't.

I might just leave that one alone because I get the impression that it's something I don't really want to know and I don't want to bring up any more bad memories than I already have or change my perception of him since he's a pretty good person, afaik.
