My trans friend was accused of having passing privilege because shes now indistinguishable from a cis woman in real life so she was told her opinion on trans issues means less.

It's a thing that can exist depending on the social context. And like LAS has shown, it can take multiple forms.

But really, it all depends on the people involved and how willing they are to enforce it.

When she was a man she was manlier than I am but she just put in the time and the work to transition as best she could and is now a nice looking girl.

I'd be happy for someone who could pass well instead of throwing terms with negative implications out like that and saying they have a smaller say in trans matters. That's pretty shitty. The community should be more supportive.

The whole "white passing" shit coming from white people is just another way to trivialize our experience. Like okay yeah I'm a "white passing" Mexican American but that didn't stop peoole from calling me racial slurs growing up lmao

yea but the point is you likely havent experienced the degree of discrimination of someone who doesnt have white passing privilege, obviously the difference isnt as much as between having white privilege or not having white privilege, but white passing is certainly a privilege. I for one am thankful we have terminology like this to differentiate whos thoughts and feelings matter more pertaining to different topics and situations

There has always been a lot of infighting over that exact issue. You see a lot of it on twitter to this day.

but if you accept something like this, don't you have to accept that someone like the Obama children are growing up with so much privilege that it dwarfs any negatives of being black? Like, if you want to put everything on a rating scale, you will be asked to defend your rankings.

That's not my experience at all, and "passing for white" isn't even something I learned from white people. It's something that came up after I noticed how I am often treated better when handling interactions of some businesslike manner. Not to say that your experience is false.

an extremely pale black person will probably see some benefits from it, but that doesnt mean theyre immune to all racial disparities

Thats not an unreasonable point, I do think financial/wealth privilege is a thing though. Currently you get more points deducted for having white privilege than financial privilege, so the calculus works out that thoughts and feelings of Obamas daughters would still matter more than someone with white privilege. I dont agree with it but thats how we as a society agreed to grade the privilege calculus.

I really don't get the point of devaluing or disqualifying someone from having a say on an issue, just because somebody else has it worse.

Sounds like a great way for two victims to turn on each other while the perpetrator stands there looking smug.

You cant boil privilege down to numbers and also privilege is explicitly positive: sociologically speaking, youre privileged because you dont have to worry about X things oppressed people do. Also oppression compounds when youre part of multiple oppressed groups( see intersectionality).

It also completely denies the variance of region. Shit that would get you killed in Alabama might get you a handy at the Javits Center.

I think there's a difference between "Your opinion on trans issues means less if you are passing" and "You claiming that actually trans people don't get that much street harassment means less if you are passing".

The privilege calculator does need to be revised, theres gaping issues, we need sociologists and scientists working on a privilege score like we have a credit score. How else does
anyone expect the public to differentiate between whos thoughts and feeling pertaining to different issues should be valued more? Its easy to calculate the extremes, a billionaire obviously has more privilege than someone in poverty, but what about those cases in the margins where its harder to tell? Privilege score is a better idea than social credit score imo

it's been a while, but i'm pretty sure it was created as satire, but that's been lost this far down the repost chain.

It also has the problem that it's playing multiple issues off against each other, as if that somehow negates whatever persecutions you face.

That said, i somehow messed up my calc, so I guess I'll take that extra -30.

Mexican isn't a race.

(There are white Mexicans with blonde hair and blue eyes etc. if someone doesn't understand the point I'm making. They are a minority race in Mexico but they are also Mexicans.)

I dunno anything about any of this stuff. But it seems to me that you should exclude someone based on what they went through just because they have already went through it.

It would be like excluding the World Series championship team in conversation about Baseball Today because they already won and what they say isn't important anymore. Some would argue they would be the ones that know it best having gone through it all. Or something. I'm not great at analogies.

Edit: What I'm trying to say is who would know more about the subject then the person who already went through it. It seems weird to ignore them because they have gone through it. But again, trans isn't something i completely "get" because it's not my world.
