Would "eye for an eye" be a good justice system for you? Or what?

Almost every country in the world releases people at some point for murder. The US is one of the most strict and the justice system thought 30 something years was enough for him. Would you prefer he get life in prison? Idk if that disingenuous thing was about my post but I'm completely serious
how much time is a life supposed to be worth? and how is that time supposed to bring any closure or comfort to the people whose families have been broken? they just have to suck it up and get over it because the killer's all better now, something clicked in time or he found jesus or some shit and now he's ready to be a functioning member of society. rehabilitation isn't "justice" after people have been killed

look at this loaded language, "you want to kill him," give me a break with the bleeding heart "compassion" for people who sure didn't show compassion themselves. i don't want to kill anyone, but yes, the death penalty exists for a reason. is that what you want to hear? so i can become this topic's big bad guy for you to sandbag up on? save it, because it doesn't mean anything

and like i said, for the sake of people that need organ transplants, it's important that this killer lives, so he found himself a golden ticket in the shape of a... pig heart, i guess

aaand now i do know the details. and look at what it was over. i stand by what i say

Bennett, then 23, attacked Shumaker while he was playing pool at the Double T Lounge in Hagerstown on April 30, 1988 after his then-wife, Norma Jean Bennett, sat on Shumakers lap, according to The Daily Mail, a Hagerstown newspaper.
Bennett struck Shumaker from behind then stabbed him repeatedly in the abdomen, chest and back, according to court testimony cited by The Washington Post.

It was an entirely experimental surgery. They were essentially performing surgery on a guinea pig whom few people would miss due to his criminal background. I think it's a really dumb thing to say if he should deserve the heart, he should be commended for taking on the risk in order to push medical science further. Since it was a success, more people in the future can opt in for pig heart transplant since we're never going to run out of pig hearts.

Pig hearts are going to be mass produced, you don't need to deserve it.

What's your point?

People lose perspective and objectivity when it concerns themselves. You have some people who would put the lives of thousands to selfishly save 1 life that they personally care about. That doesn't make the decision concerning one's self correct.

Second issue here is you're projecting. Not everyone is you, who would remain bitter and spiteful years later after the criminal did their time.

so now we're also going to pretend every- or even most- victims and their families forgive their killers? why pull these cards like there aren't always articles with what the families have to say?

It's funny that you talk about "loaded language" yet you've repeatedly called David Bennett Sr. a murderer and a killer. Something he was never convicted of.

Fact is, they weren't even sure this transplant was going to work. Hell, even now, they're still monitoring him in the hospital. Whether he "deserves" it or not is irrelevant. As others have said, he was basically a guinea pig.

right, because the justice system never makes mistakes. i posted the circumstances around the attack, and you know what it resulted in, so why play games?

i'm a realist, i call it like i see it. the types who think the death penalty should be abolished are idealists, they call it like they want it to be, not how it ever will be

Again, pure projection.

He went to prison and served his time.

Your personal opinion and projection on what you THINK victims would do are not fact. No matter how much you scream it. Not all victims seek out the death penalty or wish death. In fact, many are against it, including with this scenario. Not to mention he was a guinea pig at that.

Yes, which is why we don't just ask the offended party what the convicted person's sentence should be. From reading the rest of your posts in this thread it really looks like you just want to kill him

I assume the type of people who don't believe a convict can ever truly pay their debt to society / earn forgiveness would also see ex-cons as the ideal guinea pigs for experimental life-or-death surgeries. So I'm failing to see the controversy here, unless those types are royally bent out of shape that the surgery actually succeeded.

alright, well i'm not gonna argue with bad faith idealists about this all day. i usually just keep out of it whenever an argument about it pops up, since it just goes in circles like this. just really hard to believe that adults here buy into the whole "murder is excusable after X years" thing

No one argued murder is excusable after X amount of years.

It doesn't change not everyone believes in the death penalty or death for criminals.

Your projecting that everyone does is nothing more than just you spitting out baseless claims.

I get the dilemma here, but like...where's the line? You can't just start arbitrarily deciding ex-cons don't deserve random things.

Do murderers deserve to enjoy delicious fried chicken sandwiches? NO! BANNED from Popeye's!
