I'm watching a Cinemassacre video, the people who do the Angry Video Game Nerd videos, and Mike Matei just said his catchphrase, "It's like Legend of Zelda." Anything at all provokes a Zelda reference from him. Hearts, swords, the ability to enter your name on the title screen, etc. For me, I feel like my most referenced intellectual properties are Super Mario, Batman, James Bond, Star Wars, and Godzilla. If there's a muscular villain whom the hero has to defeat through means other than physical strength, I might compare the bad guy to Jaws or Oddjob from Bond. If I need a throwaway reference to a a hero or villain, it's going to be Batman and/or Joker. Anything involving a monster gets a 'Zilla reference. And anything fantasy or adventure-related is somehow tied back to Mario for me. I'm in no position really to judge Mike over excessive Zelda references. If there are clouds against a blue sky, I'm liable to compare it to Mario. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I don't. I only do a reference if I feel it is actually relevant for a comparison. "It's like the Legend of Zelda" would probably only come up if someone was discussing Peter Pan. Have you ever seen Peter Pan and Link in the same room? --- My maid will hear about this. ... Copied to Clipboard!

BloodMoon7 posted... I don't. I only do a reference if I feel it is actually relevant for a comparison. That's the thing. Sometimes, it is relevant. If I'm comparing an action-packed Sherlock Holmes adaptation to a Batman movie, there might be some sincere overlap in terms of characterization and pacing. Other times, I might make a Batman reference using his name as a synonym for a standard action hero. "Would you ever see Batman trip and fall down a flight of stairs during a chase sequence?" ... BloodMoon7 posted... That...really isn't that relevant but ok... Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes reimagines the detective as a Batman-like protagonist; a sulking intellectual capable of physical combat, who attempts at all times to remain two steps ahead of the criminal element in London. Irene Adler is even reimagined as a Catwoman-like love interest, appealing to the romantic in Sherlock while her thieving ways repulse his anti-crime sensibilities. The film is very much a post-Batman Begins take on Sherlock Holmes. ... Copied to Clipboard!
