Got a hankering for something easy to read but fairly decent. I read the first one over a decade ago and it was ok for YA fiction.
And if so, are the other series by him good too (the Egyptian one, for instance).

I would say the initial series (five or six books? I don't remember) was fairly consistent in quality, or at least that's what I remember as a teen. If you enjoyed the first one I don't think you could go wrong finishing the series.

I have no idea what the sequel series are like, and I never really got involved with the fanbase so I don't know if there's some kind of weird discourse around the franchise. I notice it seems to have become a lot more popular since I read it, so I imagine it's doing ok.

Yeah, it's solid for what it is. I'd also recommend The Reckoners trilogy and The Rithmatist by Sanderson if you are in the YA mood.
