I'm assuming the headphones themselves were 1K or more?

nope, only like $400-500.

it's quite ridiculous, but you're asking for trouble if you go with anything other than OEM Sennheiser unfortunately. and these headphones have served me a very, very long time so.. they're worth it.

If they're that old I personally would have just replaced them entirely.

you might be right to suggest that. but i felt that, other than those parts that get physical wear, these could at least in theory last much longer. maybe my lifetime, even? also, i have another pair of phones that are competitive with them, so i would have no need to actually replace them. it was either spruce them back up, or let them continue to play second fiddle forever.
i guess what i'm saying is i just spent 100 bucks needlessly

That's fine reasoning as justification. I own a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3s. I never would have bought them myself, but I really appreciate the convenience of wireless and noise canceling now that I've used them. I used to own a pair of Audio Technicas I loved that were half the price. I don't think I would buy wired headphones again though unless it was a second high end pair only to be used indoors.

Yeah, i have a whole DAC+amp stack for dedicated home listening so i'm committed to the wired game for that purpose. I could really use a pair of wireless anything though for other things, either cans or buds/IEMs perhaps for work. Have always had a good experience with Sonys.
