What a terrible move

they were so good for answering the "who does this actor remind me of?" question my brain refuses to stop asking.

They had such a terrible reputation for the forums for like current blockbusters or whatever but it really was a nice place to see discussion on older and obscure movies. I miss them.

The IMDB forums were mostly full of bitter old people and trolls. Racist jokes and comments about black actors, sexist comments about actresses being sluts or - in the case of someone who's spoken about about being raped - outright saying they actually enjoyed it, and variations of the Rod Stewart story where any actor they believed to be gay had to get their stomach pumped because of all the cum they ingested - the IMDB forums were dogshit.

I was into forums and shit back then, the IMDB forums were particularly low quality and trashy beyond compare. There was no redeeming quality to them, at least not compared to all of the horseshit that came with them.

This is pretty much my memory of them as well. It wasn't all an internet hellscape, but an uncomfortably large portion reminded me of /b/

yeah, i've seen that criticism a lot since they died, but i don't remember seeing anything like it when i was there myself. must have just been on the right pages.

That's probably the one area where the forums were useful. I think that given how ubiquitous and well-known IMDB was back then, it was a breeding ground for trolls and bitter old shitheads, as well as for cinephiles who could find community in their obscure faves and legitimately discuss cinema.

I'm glad to hear that the forums weren't all bad, but a majority of what I saw was the absolute worst.

The main/bigger boards were trash, but smaller ones and ones that just weren't shit were cool as hell. It was nice being able to discuss about specific movies and actors. Overall, I just stayed clear of the bad ones so I miss IMDB's forums overall.
